1 Qualities, Characteristics and Roles Common to an Effective Sport Leader.

2 Qualities of a common sports leader; knowledge of the sport, knowledge of the laws and regulations , understanding the physical and mental needs of participants, and the ability to inspire confidence and motivate others. Knowledge of the sport means the leader knows the background of the sport, knows clearly and confidently the rules and regulations, and has experience playing the sport. Having knowledge of the sport will help the leader to pass on and teach correct information to their participants and who they are coaching, helping them to achieve full understanding of the sport. Knowledge of the laws and regulations means that the sports leader is coaching a sport without breaking any laws, it also means that their participants wont be breaking any regulations as the leader will be able to set an example and will be able to teach other people how to not break them. The leader will need to have a full correct understand of the laws and regulations within sport to achieve this quality. Understanding the mental and physical needs is a very important quality of a sports leader. For the participants to reach their full potential, their leader needs to be able to understand their needs both mentally and physically. For example, if someone suffered from asthma, their leader would need to understand what may happen if they have an attack. The ability to inspire confidence and motivate others helps people playing sport become inspired by their leader, meaning they will thrive for achievement, helping them to set goals and aims, leading to motivation from both themselves and their coach. To be able to do this, the leader needs to teach and lead confidently to set an example.

Teachers and coaches do need to be qualified, however it is not the be-all and end-all. Being open-minded, inspirational, and understanding skills is more important. These qualities are what make a coach. The ability to inspire confidence and motivate others Understanding the mental and physical needs As a coach, I coach swimmers. Some of those swimmers have a disability. That is how I look at it: I coach swimmers with a disability, not disability swimmers.

5 Characteristics of an effective common sports leader; objectivity, patience, approachable and committed. Objectivity is a useful characteristic for a leader to have. A leader setting objectives for themselves helps them to improve their technique and methods, meaning they are always becoming a better sports coach or leader. If a leader is able to set objectives for themselves, they will be able to help their participants set objectives, helping them to improve and feel motivated. Patience is much needed by a sports leader, sometimes a leader may be put into a position where they feel frustrated, possibly if a someone they are teaching is struggling, cant do something, or isn't behaving correctly. These situations are likely to occur in a sports leaders career, but it is important they have patience and deal with the situation calmly to remain professional. Being approachable is an important characteristic to ensure that individuals feel comfortable to approach their sports coach. This may be whether they have an issue or just for general advise. To be approachable, a sports coach should be polite, and welcoming to all different types of people they may encounter, helping them to feel comfortable. A committed leader means that they are dedicated to their job, this will have a huge impact on their clients or who they are teaching. Sometimes a sports leader may not feel like teaching that day, or may want to have a day off, attending work and possibly doing extra work for their clients will show they are strongly committed to leading and teaching.

Being a role model is important to help motivate participants in sport. An effective sports leader or instructor can set a good example and can inspire their participants to want to follow the leaders role. Being a role model could involve having a lightening positive attitude and being good at the sport themselves. Often a sports leader is also a teacher, teaching people about the sport. For example being a P.E teacher, a sports tutor, a sports coach etc. It is important that a sports teacher teaches effectively and correctly to ensure that participants are learning sport to a high standard. Being a motivator is a role that sports leaders should follow. Participants enjoy sports and activities if they feel motivated and enthused so that they are able to reach their full potential whilst having a good time.
