What can SAIGE Chapters do?
Be a presence in your agency and serve as a resource to the American Indian / Alaskan Native Employees. Serve your local AI/AN community Provide Scholarships for young AI/AN students Provide agency management with expert guidance on AI/AN issues Educate management (and all employees) on cultural sensitivity Use of phrases that may be considered “offensive” in the workplace – Let’s have a Pow Wow – instead of meeting. Utah and Kansas City MO Chapters of SAIGE have both had Lunch & Learns on Pow Wow etiquette

I was invited to attend a town hall meeting with our IRS Commissioner. He was very interested in hearing my concerns and stated he will be putting together some sensitivity training for management in the near future . How do I start my chapter?
klrei How do I start my chapter? Networking: The exchange of information or services among individuals, groups or institutions – specifically the cultivation of production relationships for business. Identify the different types of networks you already belong to Describe the benefits of maintaining an effective network Identify ways to further develop your network Describe ways to successfully employ networking skills to attain your organizational goals

Visiting with other parents at children’s activities Neighbors Friends, and groups on Social Media Attending a community event – Pow Wow, book signing etc Places / people you regularly do business with

Start Networking Contact the individual in person when possible
Be professional and concise Explain how your interests overlap Add how you feel they would be an asset to the organization and chapter Create a data base of people contacted Include: Name, preferred method of contact, talents, skills

Social Media for Networking
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram Use care when using Social Media to post your professional affiliations Consider a professional account using your name and a personal account under a “screen name” Facebook – Personal LinkedIn - Professional

All interested parties are current, paid members of SAIGE. You have elected officers – President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer What is next????

Required Chapter Documents
The following documents need to be signed by all officers and submitted in your initial package to SAIGE for Chapter approval and official recognition: Bylaws: The bylaws found on SAIGE.org are the same your chapter will follow. Should your chapter choose to add an addendum to the chapter bylaws, they must be signed and submitted to SAIGE as well. Conflict of Interest: Basic policy outlining expectations. Chapter Establishment: Roles and responsibilities of a SAIGE Chapter and SAIGE Financial Policy: Sign and send this in even if your Chapter decides NOT to fundraise. It will show you understand the role of SAIGE when it comes to finances.

Deciding to Fundraise 101 WHAT HAS TO BE DONE FIRST: IF your chapter decides to fundraise YOU MUST BE TAX COMPLIANT FIRST! DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES handle money before you are tax compliant!!! You will have to find out what the laws and regulations are in your state, and go through the application process and receive approval to legally fundraise under SAIGE in your state as a 501.c.3 organization. DON’T RISK OUR 501.C.3 STATUS

Deciding to Fundraise 101 Research the laws of your state Communicate with the SAIGE Treasurer (and CPA) when fees are involved Coordinate with SAIGE Treasurer (and CPA) to submit paperwork with payment of fee (if any) WAIT for your approval letter to handle ANY FUNDS related to your chapter PLEASE - DON’T RISK the SAIGE 501.C.3 STATUS For more information on 501.c.3 IRS.gov IRS Publication 557 Tax-Exempt Status for your Organization

Money Handling Do’s & Don’ts:
Open a bank account (Chapter Treasurer & President) Keep detailed & accurate records Follow the SAIGE Policies Chapter Establishment Policy Financial Policy Conflict of Interest Policy Bylaws Submit Bank Statements to SAIGE Treasurer & CPA Submit your annual financial report timely Ask questions if you need to DON’T: Handle funds before you have been approved as a recognized SAIGE Chapter Handle funds before you have approval from your state

UT Chapter SAIGE uses funds raised for: Student Scholarships UT Chapter SAIGE awarded a Student SAIGE member a $500 scholarship. I networked with the college and filled out forms showing SAIGE is a 501.c.3 The college matched our funds 100% Assist financially for representative of the chapter to attend Annual SAIGE National Training Program

Community Events First Annual Snuggle with a Book & Blanket Ogden School District Title VII Program Don’t Want to Fundraise? You are still needed!! 5th Annual School Supply Drive at IRS in Ogden, UT Before our chapter decided to fundraise, I decided to network in the community. I found the Title VII Program Director and learned 800 kids in my neighborhood were considered “homeless.” I advertised a SAIGE School Supply Drive at work and the 5,000 employees generously donated thousands of dollars in supplies for these kids. Pictured above: SAIGE members and volunteers after boxing up the supplies. I also got Costco involved. They have delivered 700 backpacks to the school each year since 2011.
