1 Measurement!

2 Remember the definition of Chemistry…
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes. A change in matter = a change in its energy So – we measure matter and we also measure energy

3 Metric System! The scientific system of measurement that makes math easier than does the English system because it’s based on multiplying and dividing by 10 (within a certain quantity). It’s also better because the French thought of it first.

4 The Metric System Base Units
Quantity Unit Unit symbol Length meter m Mass gram g Time second s Amount mole mol Electric current ampere A Luminous intensity candela cd

5 Tools of the trade that we’ll use here at Poly

6 Quantity being measured
Copy this chart and fill in as we go along: Quantity being measured Tool Tool’s Unit

7 Two for Volume: Beaker: Graduated Cylinder:
*** Basic unit for volume is the liter, but beakers and graduated cylinders give you volume in milliliters (mL). 1000 mL = 1 L

8 Time A chronometer, ok a clock, gives you time in seconds (s).

9 Temperature A thermometer gives you temperature in degrees Celsius (˚C).

10 Mass A triple beam balance gives you mass in grams (g).

11 Length A ruler will give you distance in centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm). 100 cm = 1 meter 1000 mm = 1 meter
