1 CLASSWORK PPT September 14 – 18, 2015
8TH GRADE PHYSICAL SCIENCE Mrs. Miret M. Ed.

2 9/14 Prepare for today’s test
FIRST: PUT YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK ON THE LAB TABLE WITH YOUR CLASS PERIOD NUMBER ON IT. Make sure your NAME and PERIOD are clearly visible on the notebook. NEXT: Take out a piece of notebook paper Put your name, the date, and your class period at the top right corner Title the test “Minneapolis Bridge Failure Test ____” Add A or B when you receive your test packet DO NOT WRITE ON THE TEST Number your paper 1 – 22, skipping a line between each number ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS USING CAPITAL LETTERS (A, B, C, D…)

3 9/14 Activity #8 The Pendulum and galileo
You will be given a piece of printer paper Put your name, the date, and your period on the back of the paper Wait for instructions on folding the paper (see next slide for sample) Add the name of the scientist GALILEO GALILEI to the center box As you watch the video (The Pendulum and Galileo/Viewable on YouTube), you will complete the following sections Add PERSONAL HISTORY to the top left box Add DISCOVERIES to the top right box Add how his /her HOW THE DISCOVERIES CHANGED THE WORLD to the lower right box Add PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGES the scientist had in the lower left box

4 ACTIVITY #8 GALILEO GALILEI
Personal History Discoveries / Inventions ACTIVITY #8 GALILEO GALILEI 17TH Century Scientist How the Discoveries and Inventions Changed the World Professional Challenges INSTRUCTIONS: Add 6 to 10 things for each one of the four categories.

5 9/16 continue Activity #8 Galileo Galilei
TASK #1: Read the biography of Galileo Galilei (See next slide for access to this document) TASK #2: Using the biography you have been given today… Add additional information to the graphic organizer started on 9/14 about The Pendulum and Galileo. Add more information to “personal history” Add more information to “professional challenges” Add more information to “discoveries” Add more information to “how discoveries changed the world”

6 CPO SCIENCE 26.1 Galileo Galilei BIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCE DOCUMENT
LINK TO REFERENCE DOCUMENT “Galileo Galilei was a mathematician, scientist, inventor, and astronomer. His observations led to advances in our understanding of pendulum motion and free fall. He invented a thermometer, water pump, military compass, and microscope. He refined a Dutch invention, the telescope, and used it to revolutionize our understanding of the solar system.”

7 Scientific Method Vocabulary Review activity
Take out a piece of notebook paper. Put your full name, the date, and your class period on the top right hand corner. We will be watching the experiment portion of “The Pendulum and Galileo” to answer these questions. (Available on YouTube) What is a variable? A variable is a factor that can have more than one value. What is the independent variable in each of the tests? 1.Angle of displacement 2.Mass of the Bob 3.Length of the string What is the dependent variable in each of the tests? 1.Change in the period (no change) 2.Change in the period (no change) 3.Change in the period (bobs swung at different speeds)

8 What are the constants in each one of the tests?
1.The mass of the bob and the length of the string. 2.The length of the string and the angle of displacement. 3.The angle of displacement and the mass of the bob. What qualitative data can be gathered from each of the tests? 1. Anything expressed in numbers. The angle of displacement in degrees, the mass of the bob in grams, and the length of the string in centimeters. 2.same 3.same

9 What is the Experimental Group in each of the tests?
1. The experiment itself is the experimental group. 2.same 3.same What is the Control Group in each one of the tests? 1.This experiment did not require a control group to be able to answer the questions asked.

10 Pendulum Data Table/chart
The Pendulum and Galileo / Data Chart Pendulum Data Table/chart Trial Independent Variables Constants Dependent Variable 1  Angle of displacement Mass of bob Length of string The angle of displacement did not change the period of swing. 2 Length of the string Angle of displacement The mass of the bob did not change the period of swing. 3 The length of the string did impacted the period of swing.

11 9/18 First things first… Please find your textbook
You will be receiving your INB Your first task when you get your INB is to add your Galileo Map as activity 8 UPDATE YOUR TOC NOW!!

12 P 3 Lab Safety Do’s and Don’ts P 4 Classroom Safety Equipment Map
Your table of contents should have the following items listed. They must be in your interactive notebook as well to receive credit for those items. Toc as of 9/18 What do those letters mean? P=PAGE, A=ACTIVITY, AND L=LAB P 1 COVER PAGE P 2 TOC P 3 Lab Safety Do’s and Don’ts P 4 Classroom Safety Equipment Map A 1 Sample Cornell Notes for this class A 2 The Curve of Forgetting A 3 The Scientific Method A 4 Fields of Science A 5 The Dropped Egg Investigation L 1 The Strength of Shapes A 6 Minneapolis Bridge Collapse Notes A7 Minneapolis Bridge Collapse Map (NOS 23-27) A 8 Galileo Galilei Graphic Organizer: Based on The Pendulum and Galileo, and the Galileo Biography.

13 Activity #9 Scientific Problem solving Review notes
You will be working individually for this activity Go to the PROBLEM SOLVING chapter in your book STARTS on NOS Use your online textbook access at home. Answer only the questions you find answers to in your book and note the page Yes they are all there… No guessing BTW We will go over measurement as a class. Do not worry if you cannot answer questions related to measurement, scientific notation, or science tools.

14 Lake benchmark assessments/science Monday 9/19 and Tuesday 9/20
You will be taking the Lake Benchmark Assessments for Science next week. Please bring a book to read so that you can read silently when you are done. Other students may still be working on completing their assessments. Thank you, and have a great weekend! Mrs. M.
