Ratifying the Constitution

EQ Should there be a written document like a Bill of Rights in the Constitution guaranteeing your rights? Or is it just understood what your rights are and nobody can take those away?

Federalism Separate powers but also shared powers between the Federal and State governments

Federalists People who supported the ratification of the Constitution

Anti-Federalists People who opposed the ratification of the Constitution Thought the Constitution took too much power away from the states Afraid a strong president would declare himself king Congress might obtain too much power Really afraid of losing what they had fought for during the Rev. War

Federalist Papers James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay wrote these papers The papers were an attempt to gain support for the Constitution

Federalists Anti-Federalists
Remove some powers from the states and give more to the national government Wanted important political powers to remain with the states Favored dividing the powers of government into separate branches of government Wanted the legislative branch to be stronger than the executive branch (afraid of a president becoming a tyrant) Proposed a single person to lead the executive branch Believed a bill of rights needed to be added to the Constitution to protect peoples rights
