7 Historical perspective
June 2013—BOR approves CDOS Credential for SWD January 2015—BOR approves multiple pathways (Field Memo—April 2015) Regents approved the CDOS Pathway in June 2016 for all students Just a reminder to the audience how quickly things have changed.

8 What is a Pathway Opportunities for more students to earn a high school diploma through various assessment options Students choose appropriate pathway to graduation according to their interests and abilities Pathways are intended to provide a more focused approach to course selection This was from Eric and Cheryl’s presentation. This is from the perspective of BoR and SED

9 The theory of action for multiple pathways
Why Invest in a Pathways Approach? Under the current system of Completion, far too many students are either dropping out of school or are not having their academic needs met thereby leading to increasing levels of remediation in entry level college classes and/or unsuccessful attempts to achieve a living wage job. The lack of coherence between K-12 and college and/or career/industry must be remedied by a model of Readiness which contains a combination of common expectations (CCLS) and multiple, similarly rigorous pathways which lead to student success. Multiple market and student-choice driven pathways will increase student engagement, student achievement, and ultimately, college, career and citizenship readiness. The result will be a strengthening of our economy and our democratic way of life. 9 9

25 In order to ensure that pathway assessments are of sufficient rigor, the proposed regulations also establish conditions and criteria by which such assessments may be approved by the Commissioner. The 4+1 pathway option would not change existing graduation course or credit requirements and students must continue to meet all current course and 22 units of credit requirements, even if they were to elect to take advantage of the 4+1 option. However, existing regulations provide several areas of flexibility for meeting course and credit requirements through, for example, the availability of integrated CTE courses and independent study (see 8 NYCRR §100.5[d][6] and [9]) Remind everyone that not all assessments can be used for a pathway assessment. Also, be aware that some of the assessments for the CDOS pathway are being looked at and may change, continue to check the NYSED website.
