1 Centella asiatica Peel-Off Masks
Febriyenti, Elfi Sahlan Ben, Marlina, Muslim Suardi and Endah Wahyuni Faculty of Pharmacy, Andalas University, Padang-Indonesia 25163 ABSTRACT Peel-off masks containing ethanolic extract of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban have been formulated in three formulas by using three different concentrations of extract i.e.: 1%; 3%; and 5%, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as polymer, propylene glycol as a plasticizer, nipagin and nipasol as preservative. The masks were subject to evaluation procedures including homogeneity, pH, spreading test, skin irritation test, elongation test, drying time test, physical stability test against cooling and the antioxidant activity assay by using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrilhydrazil). Results showed that all formulas were physically stable for 6 weeks storage and the best formula was formula which contained ethanolic extract of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban by concentration of 5%. Keywords: Centella asiatica extract, peel-off mask, PVA, PVP, propylene glycol RESULTS INTRODUCTION Cosmetics have been known since antiquity. A variety of natural ingredients has also been used as a cosmetic. Knowledge of these natural ingredient cosmetics has been obtained from generation to generation (Wasitaatmadja, 1997). There is a wide range of cosmetics that are used for skin care, one of which is the use of masks. Currently it has a lot of variety types of masks, such masks in the form of powder, gel, and plastic. Masks in gel form are a form of practical masks because masks can be removed immediately after drying without the need to rinse with water. This mask is usually known as peel-off mask. To optimize the benefits of the mask, we can add natural ingredients that provide anti-aging effects, such as Centella plant. Centella is often used as a traditional medicine. Centella provide antioxidant activity similar to vitamin C (Hashim, et al., 2011). Fig. 2. Peel-off Mask Base and Centella asiatica Peel-Off Masks Fig. 1. Centella asiatica Results of homogeneity test indicate that the peel-off mask were homogeneous for 6 weeks of storage. Skin irritation test results of peel-off masks for 1 day showed that the formula F0, FI, FII, FIII did not cause irritation to the skin panel, it is characterized by there are no appearance of red and itching of the skin panel. All formula is stable at room temperature and 5 0C for 6 weeks of storage. MATERIALS Ethanolic extract of Centella asiatica (L.) The best formula was formula which contained ethanolic extract of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban by concentration of 5%.
