Practical Information
Powerpoint and handouts are available on my website: I have written an article on this topic, published in English Teaching Professional last month. Keep questions brief – I am available afterwards for more in-depth discussion

Why use model texts?
4
Basic Lesson Plan Students read model text for gist
Teacher gives or elicits analysis framework (see next slide) Students analyse text Whole class discuss text and draw out important features (Optional: Students do a task to focus on a particular language point from the text) Students plan and write a similar text
5
CLOSE Analysis Framework
Content: what content is appropriate for this text type? Layout: what layout is conventional for this text type? Organisation: what is a logical organisation for what needs to be said? Style: what style is appropriate for this text type? Expressions: what words or phrases can I collect from this text?
6
Workshop Task 1 Analyse Content: What information is included? What is NOT included? Layout: Is there a title? Are there any special features, like lists, greetings, subheadings, etc.? Organisation: How many paragraphs are there? What kind of information is in each paragraph? Style: Is it formal? Informal? Personal? Impersonal? Persuasive? Descriptive? Concise? Expressions: Are there any useful words or phrases?

Workshop Task 2 Select & Adapt
Choose your task: informal letters or reviews of tourist attractions. Which text would you select as a model? Why? Would you adapt it at all? Why? How? Fast finishers: - Analyse the text using the CLOSE framework: what features would you draw attention to? - What follow-up writing task would you set your students?

(e.g. cut and paste in Word, cut up a photocopy of the text, blank out certain words etc.) Fast finishers: You may like to compare your ideas with another group!
