PHFI was launched in 2006 post multi-stakeholder consultations To strengthen public health system in India by building public health institutional capacity A Public private partnership, set up as an independent foundation. Registered as a Society With initial funding from government, international foundations (BMGF), private/other Launched by the Prime Minister of India, organisations Dr. Manmohan Singh in March 2006. India face The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) was conceptualised as a response to growing concern over the emerging public health challenges in India. It recognizes the fact that meeting the shortfall of health professionals is imperative for a sustained and holistic response to the public health concerns in the country, which in turn requires health care to be addressed not only from the scientific perspective of what works, but also from the social perspective of who needs it the most. The PHFI concept was developed over two years and was collaboratively evolved through consultation with multiple constituencies including Indian and international academia, State and Central Governments in India, multi & bi-lateral agencies, civil society groups in India.s a severe shortfall of public health professionals, and capacity building efforts are urgently required to address its emerging public health challenges.

PHFI: MandatePHFI has a mandate to strengthen the public health capacity in India by :• Establishing a network of new Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs)• Assisting the growth of existing public health training institutions/departments• Establishing a strong national research network• Generating policy recommendations & developing a vigorous advocacy platform• Facilitating creation of an accreditation body for public health education in India

PHFI advancing the agenda of Universal Health Coverage To develop a comprehensive plan for health in India, the Planning Commission of India under approval by the Prime Minister, constituted the High Level Expert Group (HLEG) on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) appointed as the Technical Secretariat. President PHFI as the Chair Mandate to develop a framework for providing easily accessible and affordable health care to all Indians and suggesting a 10-year strategy going forward. The report was submitted in November, 2011 PHFI involved in health sector policy discussions around healthcare financing, medicines, delivery, hu man resources, community involvement

Public Health Practice & Policy Support
Immunization Technical Support Unit December 2014 – Launch of Mission Indradhanush, a campaign to immunize all children under the age of 2 years against seven vaccine preventable diseases by 2020 ITSU, setup by the MoHFW and PHFI with funding from the BMGF, provides the techno-managerial support to implement the MoHFW’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan for Immunization
