1 Qualitative data/ research:
methods which collect data which is not numerical (numbers) Quantitative data/ research: methods which collect data which is numerical (numbers)

2 Types of Data Qualitative – words/images (non-numerical)
Quantitative – numbers e.g. percentages, scores Primary data – original data Secondary data – data collected by someone other than the researcher

5 Each slide gives a description of a study
Each slide gives a description of a study. Decide whether it would qualitative data or quantitative data.

6 A study investigated whether pocket money motivated children to keep their bedrooms tidy. They were asked how much they liked receiving pocket money, what they liked to spend it on and whether they thought it was worth trying hard to be tidy in order to receive it. Qualitative 1

7 A teacher measured whether her students worked better when they were allowed to play for the first two minutes of every lesson by looking at their test scores on weeks when they did and weeks when they did not have the chance to play. Quantitative 2

8 Novice and expert musicians were compared to see if they made more or fewer mistakes when an audience was present. Quantitative (could also get an expert to describe the ‘feeling’ with which they played – this would be qualitative) 3

9 A study into memory interviewed people who had garden sheds
A study into memory interviewed people who had garden sheds. They were asked to explain how they remembered where each item was when there were so many different things and so little room. Qualitative (counting how many things they lost would be quantitative) 4

10 A college library conducted a survey to see whether pictures helped students to understand the content of the books they borrowed. When each borrower returned a book the researchers counted how many facts they could recall from the text. Quantitative (ie how many – but if the level of detail of the facts was considered, this would be qualitative) 5

11 In a study on gender differences, male and female participants’ brain activity was compared. The brain scan rated activity along a colour-change scale from green (1) to red (10). Quantitative (translates into levels of activity which are numerical) 6

12 A study investigated whether patting a pet helped to reduce stress by comparing people who had a pet and asking them to say how cuddling or patting their pet made them feel. Qualitative 7

13 In an investigation of depth perception, people were asked to say which square appeared bigger, the blue or the yellow one. Quantitative 8
