3 Linda Brown: 1954 Young Linda Brown was denied admission to the white school close to her home. She was forced to travel miles across town to the all black school. Linda’s parents, supported by the NAACP took this case to the U.S.S.C. and WON!!!!! The Brown decision ruled segregated schools were unconstitutional. For many years, Southern states resisted integrating their public schools. The Little Rock Nine, in 1957 were STILL denied access to public schools.

9 SECRETARY OF THE NAACP, MONTGOMERY CHAPTER
ROSA PARKS SECRETARY OF THE NAACP, MONTGOMERY CHAPTER Jailed December 1, 1955 for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus. This action sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

14 Memphis Sanitation Strike
In February garbage workers were killed because of poorly maintained trucks. The workers, all black, went on strike.

18 Dr. Martin Luther King and the NAACP
MLK came to Memphis to support the garbage workers and their strike.

20 Birmingham and the Children’s March
In April 1963, Governor Orval Faubus and Sheriff Bull Connor resisted integration of Birmingham, Alabama by force.

22 Greensboro, North Carolina
Students went to Woolworth’s segregated lunch counter, sat down and remained silent. Shortly, they were harrassed and finally arrested.
