FISSION Nucleus of large atom splits into 2 or more fragments, releasing addt’l neutrons & energy Creates a CHAIN REACTION (continuous series of fission rxn’s) “uncontrolled” nuclear bombs, etc. “controlled” nuclear power plants Less pollution than other power plants Danger from accidents & waste disposal FUSION 2 or more Nuclei of small atoms join to create a larger nucleus, releasing energy Our SUN uses Fusion Safer & more efficient than Fission … fuel source (Hydrogen) is abundant Technology not yet available for Fusion
