1 Introduction to the Philosophy
of the Human Person

2 Philosophy asks about the nature of the human person.
It asks about where he/she came from What his/her essential attributes are and how he/she related to the world. Philosophy also ask about the aspirations of the human person – his/her purpose in life and how he/she should act or live in the world. Philosophy also deals with what is in store for him/her after his/her earthly life is over, where he/she is going after his/her death.

4 In this chapter, the lessons will focus on Philosophy and our search for the truth.
It is important first of all to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning and value of philosophy. The lessons will also focus on how we use philosophy. One must remember that philosophy is centered on thinking, specifically, reflection. In the end, when we do philosophical reflections properly, we will be able to arrive at the truth.

7 The pilosopo in the negative sense is one who only considers one aspect of reality. He/she has a very myopic or very limited and partial view of things and one who will cling to hi/her own beliefs and never try to understand or consider the beliefs or views of others. Even in schools, students think that a philosopher is someone who always complicates things and argues only from his/her own perspective and myopic view with intention of providing people wrong and himself/herself right.

8 Philo/Philien Sophia Etymology of philosophy
Philo/philien means “love” and Sophia means “knowledge or wisdom” It was the ancient Greek Philosopher Pythagoras who coined the word philosophia or philosophy.

9 But what does love mean in this definition?
The Greek consider three kinds of love: eros, agape and philia. EROS – refers to the kind of love that is passionate and intensely desire something. Philia – involves fondness and appreciation of the qualities of the beloved. Agape – refers to the unconditional love of God for man, but it could also be extended to a kind of brotherly love for all humanity.

11 According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, all men seek wisdom
According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, all men seek wisdom. Therefore all men are philosophers in the sense. The object of wisdom is the truth. The pursuit of the truth is the noble aspiration of every rational individual. Wisdom refers to understanding of the meaning, reason, cause of the things; it is a more general view and at the same time, a deeper appreciation of reality. Knowledge refers to acquisition of ideas, information, theories, the application of certain scientific principles and formula, or the mastery of certain methods or procedures.

12 The Academic definition of philosophy
Philosophy is defined in a more formal and logical or scientific manner. “The science of things in their ultimate principles and causes as known by natural reason alone. Science is a systematized body of knowledge. A body of knowledge is an organized and interconnected collection of ideas, theories, laws, formulas, and other conceptions about a particular field.

13 The value of philosophy
The values of philosophy lies in its being able to provide what the mind or the spirit needs. On the other hand, philosophy does not ask questions that are as objective as those of other branches of science. Philosophy guides people in distinguishing what is true from what is false and also guides them in their search for the truth.

The art and wonder of philosophizing Philosophizing is making speculations or theories about fundamental or serious issues in a complicated or difficult manner. By posing the question why, philosophy helps man search for the meaning, reason, and causes of things. “How could it be?” “Why do things happen?” “For what reason do things happen?”

15 The art and wonder of philosophizing
Reason enables a person to reflect on or examine the underlying meaning or causes of things or realties. Experience provides a person with initial data so that he/she would able to speak of his/her subsequent reflection or examination. It is also experience that keeps a person in touch or rooted in reality.
