Human Impact on Water Write on RIGHT side
2
Importance of Water -97% of Earth’s water is Salt Water
-Less than 1% is fresh liquid water -Urbanization has caused a greater demand for water in a smaller area -Water quality is the measure of the cleanliness of the water -Water supply is how much water is available
3
Threats to Water Quality
-Water pollution is when waste or other material is added to the water and it becomes harmful to the organisms that use or live in it -Point Source Pollution comes from one specific point -Example: Major chemical or oil spill -Nonpoint Source Pollution comes from many small sources -More difficult to control -Main Sources are city streets, roads, drains, farms, and mines
4
Types of Water Pollution
-Thermal Pollution is the heating of natural water by human activity -Chemical Pollution is when harmful chemicals are added to the water -Biological Pollution is when live or dead organisms are added to water supplies -Eutrophication is the increase of nutrients in the water which happens naturally -Artificial Eutrophication occurs when humans add nutrients to the water -Fertilizer and Wastewater are the main causes -Causes fast growing algae which reduces oxygen and kills fish and other organisms
6
Changing the Flow of Water
-Dams alter the flow of water causing flooding upstream and drying up the land below -Aquifers often supply water to urban areas -The water table drops when more water is taken than is naturally replaced - This can cause rivers and streams to dry up
7
Reflection (Left Side)
Draw and color an example of water pollution that you knew LEAST about. Label the type of pollution you drew. Underneath your drawing, write a sentence describing your picture. Biological Pollution Animal waste can get washed into a water supply by runoff.
