1 An Introduction to Orcid
Josh Brown Director, Partnerships orcid.org/ warszawa workshop| 24 april 2017

2 A Name is not enough A researcher can share a name, or change their name, or use their middle name or initial, or their name could be spelt differently, or have an accent…

3 There are 38 authors whose last name is “Wang”
There are 38 authors whose last name is “Wang”

4 One researcher may have many profiles or identifiers

5 What is ORCID? An identifier for researchers A registry
A set of standard procedures for connecting researchers to their affiliations and activities A committed community building connectors An international-scale open research effort

6 ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes researchers from each other

7 ORCID’s vision is a world where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time.

8 Core Principles of ORCID
Researcher control Community governance Openness Persistence

9 ORCID is OPT-in ORCID is an opt-in system
You own and control your record ORCID record is portable and travels with you throughout your career

10 ORCID is a community effort

11 The ORCID COMMUNITY Over 3.26 million researchers
~700 members from 39 countries, including national consortia in Australia, Belgium, Canada. Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Taiwan, the UK and 4 regional consortia in the US Over 250 integrations in each sector of the research community

12 Integrations by sector

13 Integrations by region

14 Connected articles

15 Publisher requirements
Other publishers requiring ORCID iDs in 2016: PLOS, eLIFE, Science, Hindawi, IEEE, AGU…

16 What about…

17 Peer review workflow Publisher Author ORCID
Link own ORCID to author profile Add ORCID to co-authors too Publisher Embed authors’ ORCID in the review and push a DOI or citation ORCID Receive new review info from publishers and add to authors’ ORCID records Notified by

18 The ability to uniquely identify contributors is a deceptively simple concept which, if realised, could enable forms of real-time understanding of scientific research that up to now have been extremely costly (if not impossible). --Jonathan Kram, Wellcome Trust

19 Funders National funding agencies are using ORCID in their grants management systems including the National Research Foundation (ZA) National Institutes of Health (US), Research Councils UK, and the Australian Research Council.

20 New developments.

21 Affiliation ‘round trip’
A user signs in to ORCID using their organization credentials If their home institution is an ORCID member, sign-in can trigger an alert for the member to request permissions to read/write to that user’s ORCID record Granted permission, the member can then assert affiliation into the user’s ORCID account.

22 V2 API: SCALABILITY Only 4 Scopes Multiple, clean XSDs Item based

23 PERSON V2 UI: MORE DETAILS
Ordering Source Last modified Privacy

24 EXTERNAL ID TYPES There are loads of different identifiers out there
Different communities require different identifiers It’s hard for us to know which our members require The solution? Let members request new types!

25 Spend more time making contributions and less time managing them
