He will never be forgotten for his traits have been passed on to those who continue to help young people learn life through the great sport of wrestling. From one of Rollin’s many great admirers

4 Rollin died tragically on May 20th, 2006 in a rafting accident on
the Klickitat river. He was among friends and living life to the fullest as he always did. He will be fondly remembered for he has had a positive impact on kids and adults for helping them learn life through their experiences. Rollin wished to leave a Foundation that could continue to give kids life experiences and opportunities long after he could no longer do it himself.

6 Rollin Schimmel Teacher, Coach, Mentor and Friend In 1969, Rollin had a vision to build one of the state’s top wrestling programs, in Pendleton Oregon. It took Rollin 35 years of hard work but for 25 years now, Pendleton has been one of the most feared and respected programs in the state. His wrestlers have given him over 400 dual meet victories and many Individual state champions. More than the wins themselves, it was about building a winning program and teaching kids to be Winners. Rollin’s efforts and success got him honored with induction into the Oregon & National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. He had a special gift of getting the most out of kids and people, plus bringing them together for a goal and to get projects done. In 2004, Rollin organized, financed and constructed, with communities’ help, our new wrestling building. This was done to give kids of all ages a place to practice, which they didn’t have before, and to keep the Vision alive for wrestling in Pendleton. This Building has been named the Schimmel Wrestling Building, in his memory. We take pride in his years of Dedication, Leadership and Vision for the kids in our community. Pendleton will forever build on that foundation he created to teach kids how to be the very best they can be, WINNERS. LET’S KEEP THE VISION ALIVE!!

7 Community and Kids Rollin was involved with these throughout his entire life in Pendleton. He started as a Teacher & Coach in 1969 plus worked as a Grounds Keeper at the Little League field, for the knights of Pythias. For him, it was about helping kids & the community. He ended as a Mentor, Coach and Past Chancellor Commander / Trustee for the Knights, still helping kids & the community, in 2006. 11 COACHES LEARNING FROM COACHES, FOREVER!
Delance Duncan & Rollin at the State Tournament in Delance Coached Rollin on the very 1st Oregon High School Cultural Exchange team to Japan in the 1960’s. 20 years later, Rollin coached a Cultural Exchange team that wrestled in Germany . That team included two of Rollin’s PHS wrestlers. Dave Boor, who won a state high school championship under Schimmel in 1988, remembers how the coach would motivate his wrestlers. "When you wrestled for him, he wasn't your favorite person because he would play a lot of games with you," said Boor, now the head coach at Riverside. "He did it to mentally prepare you. It worked out because he got the best out of his athletes. I understand what he did a lot more today as a coach."

12 Fred Phillips has been Pendleton's coach since Schimmel retired again in He was an assistant during Schimmel's final season. "I've had the privilege to work with one of the greatest coaches in Oregon history," said Phillips. "Over the course of five years, we were friends and he was a mentor to me. He was honest and fair. You may not have agreed with some of the things he did, but the decisions he made were because he wanted what's best for the team." Pendleton H.S wrestling awards banquet. Picture of kids

13 Co-workers, friends and family members remember him for the way he carried himself, his love for reaching out to others, and the lessons he taught people of all ages - on and off the mat. Picture of Rollin & Kid Rollin Schimmel did not limit himself to the wrestling venue. No matter what big event was happening in Pendleton, chances were he could be found helping its organizers or just conversing with people. The man enjoyed much success as a high school wrestling coach, but
