Ms. Quimby’s Class January 20 This Week Next Week
In writing the children produced a piece of work about the dreams they have for our world. This will be posted on our class bulletin board in the next couple of weeks. In word study we began learning about the different rules to make a word plural. In social studies the children are continuing to learn about the beginnings and growth of our country. They have learned about different Native American groups, early settlers who came from Europe, and explorers who led the way for westward expansion. This week we focused on Martin Luther King and what makes him so heroic. The children did an inferencing activity and were given different objects i.e. rubber band, cotton ball, penny and thought about connections these objects have to Martin Luther King. The children came up with wonderful ideas such as, a rubber band is similar to MLK because he wanted to bring everyone together. Next Week In reading next week we will begin our nonfiction unit. In this unit your child will learn: - text features and how they help us as readers. how she/he can organize what was learned by pausing often and collecting their thoughts. how to figure out what the paragraph is about by training our minds to pick out a topic sentence. In writing we will begin our nonfiction unit. This week your child will - choose a topic and break it up into subtopics - take notes on their subtopics and make sure the information they have relates to their topic In social studies we will finish up our unit and will prepare for a test on Friday.
