2 A few Definitions of Information
a message received and understood data: a collection of facts from which conclusions may be drawn; "statistical data" knowledge acquired through study or experience or instruction data that has been interpreted, translated, or transformed to reveal the underlying meaning Information is data and facts that have been organized and communicated in a coherent and meaningful manner Something that can be recorded, communicated and computed with

The English word “COMMUNICATION” comes from a Latin noun ‘communis’ and Latin verb ‘Communicare’ which means – To impart To participate To share, or To make common But, What is it that we share in Communication? It is the ‘INFORMATION’, i.e. something to tell, in whatever way we like, or, as the situation demands.

4 Communication & its social aspect
In society, we share Thoughts & feelings Emotions & Reactions Ideas & Philosophies Facts & Figures With individuals as well as groups at all levels. In other words, “Communication is essentially the ability of one person to make contacts with another and to make himself or herself UNDERSTOOD.”

5 Communication : as a process
Communication is not just an act, it is actually a process by which meanings like information, ideas, emotions, skills, knowledge are exchanged/transmitted between people through the use of a common set of symbols, words, pictures, figures, Graphs, drawings, illustrations etc There are auditory (verbal) means, such as speaking, singing and sometimes tone of voice nonverbal, physical means, such as body language, gestures, sign language,, touch, eye contact, or the use of writing.

7 The Process of Communication
The information source decides to communicate and encodes a message, transmits it through a channel to the receiver which is then decoded and acted upon to provide the feedback. ‘There are noises or distortions in between’. 8 Functions of Communication
Communication performs the functions of: Information (e.g. News) Entertainment (e.g. Movies/gossip) Enlightenment, (e.g. sermon) Persuasion (e.g. Counseling) In addition, the functions of communication also include Evaluation (e.g. viva-voce) Direction (e.g. Teaching) Influencing, (e.g. An Advertisement) Orientation (e.g. A Lecture)

9 Types of Communication
Communication has been classified into several types: Verbal & Non-verbal Technological & Non-technological Mediated & non-mediated Participatory & Non-participatory On the other hand, according to the no. of people involved in the experience of communication, the typology can range from: Intrapersonal ->interpersonal ->group ->mass

10 Successful Communication
In order to be able to successfully perform these functions, communication must be so designed and planned that It gains the attention of the receiver; Must use the signals, symbols, or codes that are easily understood by the receiver; And it must arouse needs in the receiver and suggest some way of satisfying these needs which are appropriate to the receiver’s situation to create the desired result.

12 The Magic word ‘Multimedia’
The literal meaning of the word ‘Multimedia’ derives from roman word ‘multus’ = “ a lot, multiple, many” … and Medium = device/system for the exchange of information ‘The evolution of Multimedia technology is the dawn of multiple faceted new communication medium’

13 Past & Present of Multimedia
Who were the first multimedia creators? The tribal storytellers? The cave painters? Traditional theatre? Religious rituals involving all senses? Meditation – ‘theatre in the mind’? What is common between these and modern multimedia creators? Conveying meaning Using the most expressive technology to achieve total immersion

14 Multimedia – a few Definitions
Multimedia refers to the integration of multiple media such as graphics, text, video, sound and animation - which together can multiply the impact of your message & possibilities of better communication. Multimedia is the art, science, and technology of creating and disseminating meaningful information.

16 Assignments of the Week
Week No. 1 Method Gather Information from Internet/Books/Market Surveys 1. See the videos and find which one is better and how it is better. Give points of scale of work done in making these videos (overview points).
