After the video, Mr. Soria and students will discuss“what are some worthy things that we can make a difference in and how ?”students will write an article saying “if I want to make a change, I can….”. Students will also do an wordfind about Martin Luther King Jr.

Solis Middle School JANURARY 2017 Ms. Erica Esqueda, Librarian Ms. Jessica Vega Herrera, Librarian Clerk Phone: CAMPUS DATE TITLE TYPE BRIEF DESCRIPTION Solis Middle School January 4th - 31st Game Days in the Library: School Scrabble Activities: Every Monday and Wednesdays are game days in the library. We are moving on to Scrabble this January. Board games are available to students all day on these days. All of this is in preparation for this year's 3rd annual School Scrabble tournament in February. For over two decades, the School SCRABBLE Program has been providing kids a fun and worthwhile extension of the classroom. Educators and parents have found that School SCRABBLE has positively impacted participating kids by strengthening: verbal skills, curiosity, math skills, time management, strategic thinking, teamwork skills, social skills, and attention span. January 14th: Last Day to Register and Ensure Packet January 27th: Packet Pick Solis 4pm to 8pm January 28th: 5K Color Run 8am Solis Library 5K Color Run Activities: Interested participants can register for the 5K run by visiting APSolis.eventbrite.com or by completing a paper registration and submitting it to Solis Library. Registration is only $20 and participants receive a shirt, racing bib, and color packet. Last day to register an ensure packet items will be Saturday, January 14th. A.P. Solis Middle School is introducing a new fundraising program called My School Color Run. The Color Run is open to the public and will take place on January 28th, at Donna City Square Park at 8am. A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd medal will be awarded for each age division: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over. Anyone interested in more information or a copy of the paper registration form can contact Erica Esqueda at (956) or Check out the a video here: January 4th - 31st Raffle Winners announced: 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th New Year Book Challenge Activities: A.P. Solis Middle School students your library challenges you to read and test on as many books as you can this month. Every test you take with an 80% or better enters you in raffles going on every Friday this month. Which book will you choose to read at the start of a New Year requires some careful consideration. The simple resolution is just to "Read More." Let's make 2017 a year of fantastic reading. You can do it! January 13th New Year, New Books Activities: On Friday, January 13th 250 NEW graphic novels will be ready for check out! The library will also have graphic novel themed activities for students all day to celebrate the exciting, new additions to the collection. Solis Library received a Dollar General grant that allowed the library to purchase $4,000 in graphic novels. Graphic novels are exploding in popularity, and there's good reason behind this phenomenon. Graphic novels positively impact children’s visual literacy skills, which are more essential than ever in the digital age. The number of titles is expanding rapidly every year, so there's something for every child's interests.

Research/Writing Contest Students will write an original story or an original poem about what makes them unique after researching how every snowflake is unique. Teachers will select the top 10 stories/poem by grade level to be judged by the librarian. Awards will be given to 1st to 3rd place by grade level. Stories and winning author’s pictures will be displayed on the monitor in front of the office and in the library. I have a dream…… Writing Contest In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, students will write an original story or an original poem about their dreams as they pertain to their future. Students will write on a die cut shape about how they plan to be a better student/individual this new year. Shape will be displayed on the display case, students participating will receive a new book. Jan 12th- 19th Martin Luther King Jr Observation week Reading/contest activity. Video about MLK Jr will be running on library display tv. Students will read one of the books from the MLK Jr display. Students will then be asked to make a bookmark about MLK Jr and what they read. Jan 20th- 26th National Pie Month Reading/Writing Activity. Book Video, Enemy Pie will be looped on library display tv. January is national pie month, with the 23rd being national pie day. Students will be asked to write a short essay about what their favorite pie is and why, complete with graphics. Those that participated will get a ticket to come by the library that Friday to receive a piece of pie. Jan 30-Feb 3rd Super Bowl of Books Reading/Display Activity. Students may select books about football to read. Students reading 5 books or more about football, football teams, biographies about football stars, will receive a sports related prize.
