Vocabulary pneumothorax: collapsed lung
(pneum = lung, thorax = chest/torso; there is air in the chest because a lung is collapsed) mechanical ventilation: having a machine breathe for you
4
Background Pneumothorax: serious condition characterized by severe chest pain and shortness of breath. It has many causes, all of which can weaken or pop the lungs, and cause air to leak into the chest. It is diagnosed by X- Ray or CT scan, and treated by chest tube, surgery, or just waiting for the air to leak out of the chest.
5
Causes chest injuries - penetrating injury can cause a lung to collapse ruptured air blisters - air leaks into the space that surrounds the lungs mechanical ventilation - assistance to breathe
6
Treatments Goal: relieve the pressure and allow the lung to re-expand
Needle or tube that removes excessive air Surgery
7
Conclusion Pneumothorax is caused by chest injuries
When a lung collapses and air is leaking out Treated with a needle taking the air out
