Considering Traditions Mark 7:1-9

When Jesus Saw Traditions:
Tradition – paradosis, a transmission (of authority) Commandment – didaskalia, (Divine) instruction “teaching as (God’s authority) (man’s authority)” He condemned making traditions commandments He condemned “unauthorized” traditions

Traditions or Commandments
Commandments don’t change Deuteronomy 4:2/Revelation 22:18-19 Traditions change Churches have changed salvation, morality, worship, scriptural focus, etc. Revelation 22:18-19 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

Traditions or Commandments
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. Colossians 2:8 Denominations struggle to separate these things “It is an article of faith from a decree of the Vatican Council that Tradition is a source of theological teaching distinct from Scripture, and that it is infallible. It is therefore to be received with the same internal assent as Scripture, for it is the word of God” Attwater, Donald, Ed., A Catholic Dictionary (New York: Macmillan, 1961).PP 41

Authorized Traditions
There are many authorized traditions mentioned Head coverings – 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 Foot washings – 1 Timothy 5:10 We still have authorized traditions Matters of expedience They are approaches to authority 1Co 11:16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. 1Ti 5:10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.

Danger #1: Changing Law to Tradition
Many now claim that LAWS are TRADITIONS “Paul’s teaching reflected a variety of traditional threads, e.g., rabbinical Judaism, Cynic and Stoic moralism, etc.” Churches have a “tradition of baptizing” Churches have a “tradition of acapella” Thompson, M.B., “Tradition,” Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, G.F. Hawthrone, R.P. Martin, D.G. Reid, Eds. (Downer’s Grove, IL: InterVarsity). pp 944

Danger #1: Changing Law to Tradition
Many now claim that LAWS are TRADITIONS - Worship (Communion, Songs, Days) - Lifestyles (Marriage, Home, Modesty) By teaching as TRADITION the COMMANDMENTS of God, one can invalidate the Word of God Communion: Order and Emblems and Day Singing: musical instruments, the acapella tradition Marriage: tradition around MDR, roles in the home, Modesty: sexually immodest clothing
12
Danger #2: Changing Tradition to Law
Many now claim that TRADITIONS are LAWS - Worship (Communion, Songs, Days) - Lifestyles (Marriage, Home, Modesty) By teaching as TRADITION the COMMANDMENTS of God, one can invalidate the Word of God Communion: one cup, bread breaking Songs: books or on the screen, Days: Wednesday night studies Marriage: the Wedding process (and a preacher’s role) Home: “Children should be seen and not heard” Modesty: Pants, ties, jackets

Making Applications Know what you believe - What is a commandment - Know that these are unalterable - What is an authorized tradition - Know that these can change
