2 Who are we? Where are we going?
Father Son Holy Spirit Why this series? Why are we asking these questions? Because we desire it to become a reality in our lives. Who are we? Our identity is not something that we choose, but rather something that we receive. It’s vital that we understand where we receive it from. Where are we going? Our Purpose flows out of our identity. Introduce Table Visual: Three- Dimensional Cube. Our identity in relation to each member of the Trinity.

3 Who are we? Where are we going?
Father Fellow Citizens of God’s Kingdom Inclusive Belonging Where are we going? On a journey that creates a church family that is fundamentally inclusive and fosters a sense of belonging. Why? Because the gospel brings radical inclusion to the excluded. How do we achieve this? Equal access Equal status Primary Allegiance to Christ

4 Who are we? Where are we going?
Son Body of Christ Incarnational Now Who is He? Jesus Christ is Lord over all. Who are we? The Body of Christ: Metaphorically Different people fit together (1 Corinthians 12- one body, many parts) More than a metaphor Union with Him (John 15- vine and branches) Authority and power to overcome all opposition because our leader and head is Lord of all. Here and now expression of Jesus Christ (The Kingdom is Today!). Where are we going? On a journey to build a church family that is fundamentally incarnational. Meaning we embody the fullness of Jesus Christ by expressing His person and rule in the here & now. How do we do this? Strengthen our union with Him Exercise His authority Live like Him

5 Who are we? Where are we going?
Holy Spirit Temple of the Holy Spirit Charismatic Filling This morning, we’re going to explore another aspect of our identity- we are a temple of the Holy Spirit!

6 Ephesians 2:19-22 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

7 Unity 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (2:21-22). Theme #1= Unity In whom/ In Him Jesus is our source. Available 24/7 We find our true place and function in Christ

8 Unity 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (2:21-22). 16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Joined together 1 Cor. 3:16-17 Context= divisions in the church. Worldly Mere infants Drinking milk not eating solid food Arguing over who is their leader Not a “1st century only” problem Inwardly Connected Rejects individualism but requires outward focus and humble submission What does it look like? Shared life Partnership in fulfilling tasks

9 Growth 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (2:21-22). 5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5 Theme #2= Growth The whole structure A more accurate translation= “Everything that is being built” Grows Working progress We can relate! Towards what God intends it to be New Heaven and Earth (Rev. 21) Restoration New Commissions Renewal of all things Overcoming corruption, decay and death Filling the whole earth with Jesus’ love, grace, power and glory. Link between growth and unity 1 Cor.3:6-7 “We plant and water. He grows”

10 Home 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (2:21-22). 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14) 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:19) Theme #3= Home A Holy Temple Naos (nah-os), not Hieron (hee-er-on) 2 Greek words for temple in NT Hieron= entire temple complex Naos= Holy of Holies, inner shrine; special meeting place between God and His people; glory of God descended; place of His presence. Naos is found in Jesus (John 1:14) (John 2:19) Link to John 2 passage- 21st Century Temples (beauty, worship and sacrifice) Jesus angry because its was dishonoring to God and a misuse of it’s proper purpose Naos is found in disciple’s lives through the Holy Spirit

11 Home 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (2:21-22). …For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people… (2 Cor. 6:16) 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body (1 Cor. 6:19-20). Dwelling Place For who? Holy Spirit His Presence– Glory (2 Cor. 6:16—Leviticus 26:12) His Power-- Authority His Purity– Holiness (1 Cor. 6:19-20) (Holy= set apart)

12 Ephesians 4:30 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. He desires to fill us (5:18) It grieves Him if we restrict or prevent Him.
