1 Repair of Steel Beam/Girder Ends with Ultra High Strength Concrete
UCONN Research Team Arash E. Zaghi, PhD, PE Kay Wille, PhD Kevin Zmetra, PhD ConnDOT Personnel Bradley Overturf Richard C. Hanley, PE Rabih Barakat, PE Timothy Fields, PE TRB State Representatives Meeting July 25–28, 2016| Providence, Rhode Island

2 Problem Statement Corrosion of girder ends due to leaking joints
Bearing capacity may significantly drop Existing repair methods: Expensive Time consuming May require lane closure Lead paint removal Corrosion remains an issue

3 Novel Repair Method A low cost, low impact, easy to implement method
Utilize Ultra-High Strength Concrete (UHPC) that is easy to form (may achieve 12ksi in 12Hrs) Steel studs are shot to transfer forces to the concrete No jacking or temporary shoring Minimal surface preparation, less concerns with lead Protection against future corrosion Loading Point

4 Failure Modes Front View Side View

5 Load-Deformation Results
70% loss in cross-section 76% lead to reduction of capacity Repair capacity 25% higher than undamaged
