Turnitin is a web-based application. You license it annually based on the number of FTE students at your campus. The faculty sets up their classes & assignments, they load their student lists, and students then submit their assignments via the web interface.
Every student submission is compared to 3 databases:
Web content: We have our own search and we index billions and billions of pages of content.
Subscription based publication content: It’s over 90 thousand publications. If you Google something, you would not find it if it was in one of these subscription publications. That stuff is generally behind some sort of subscription wall.
And over 135 million student papers that have been previously submitted to Turnitin.
Turnitin’s OriginalityCheck generates an Originality Report with a similarity index that shows how much of the text in the paper matches sources that are in our databases.
