So how do the professions fit into the Circle of Care?
Athletic Trainers Physicians / Physician Assistants Nurses Physical Therapist / PT Assistant Strength and Conditioning Specialists Athletic Trainers – let’s talk about athletic trainers specifically for just a minute. They are college graduates…must be certified through the BOC – happens by taking a national board exam after graduating…NATA represents more than 30,000 ATC’s PT/PTA – what’s the difference between a PT Aide and a PTA? PT Aide – not licensed, but can perform certain tasks under supervision of a PT or PTA PTA – Assistant – requires a 2-year assoc. degree, more involvement with patient care, plan of care, still needs to be under the supervision of PT CSCS – Works in many different settings but as it relates to the sports med team, primary role is to evaluate existing levels of fitness. Provides motivation, direction and health-related suggestions to individual athletes or teams. Can work in health clubs, individual clients’ homes, high schools, professional teams, etc.

A number of individuals, each performing specific functions relative to caring for the injured athlete. *Team Physician *Athletic Trainer *Coach *Athlete *Parent/Guardian *School Administration *Strength/Conditioning Coach

Team Physician “Captain” of the sports Medicine team
Available in all professional teams, all colleges and some high schools Has final decision in an athlete’s ability to participate, or, play. In the absence of a team physician, it is the Athletic Trainer’s responsibility to make sure sports medicine team is working together in best interes of athlete.

Coach Major role is to teach athletes how to engage, improve, and excel in a certain sport without injury Must be certified in First Aid/CPR Must support instructions of physician when making decisions affecting the athlete’s physical well-being Sometimes, coaches are responsible for maintaining equipment and protective devices for their sport

Athlete Pretty obvious how this one fits in, right?
Athlete does have responsibility to carry out the orders given by the doctor, athletic trainer, or coach. He/she needs to make coach and athletic trainer aware of treatment history to ensure proper reconditioning upon return to play

Parent / Guardian If the athlete is a minor, parent must be notified (verbally or in writing) if son or daughter is injured Should do everything possible to secure proper medical treatment for their son/daughter

School Administration
Responsible for providing the appropriate staff for each athletic event and practice Observe injury trends throughout athletic program and take necessary steps to prevent trends from continuing Example??
