1 The tides Water goes in and out twice a day
Caused by the moon, which acts like a big magnet on the water The moon pulls the water out as it moves around the earth

2

3 Tides

4 Water Cycle Water in the ocean gets heated up by the sun and is evaporated up into the sky to form clouds Rain falls from the sky back down to earth and forms streams and rivers Streams and rivers flow back into the sea You can use simple tools to show how steam and clouds and rain are formed / caused

5

6 Habitats A place where an animal or a group of animals live…
E.g. A rocky shore Try to get students to think of different types of habitat For Junior class just name some For older classes talk about the differences and what problems animals might have living there

7 Different types Grass lawn / field / woodland
Sandy shore / rocky shore / muddy shore / cliffs Open sea / deep sea / rivers / lakes Rainforest Desert Arctic

8 Types of Seashores Types of Shores: Muddy Shores (e.g. estuaries)
Rocky Shores Sandy Shores Shingle beaches

9 How the Seashore is Divided
Zonation: The Intertidal Zone is also divided into three parts The Seashore is divided into three parts: Splash Zone Intertidal Zone Subtidal Zone There are lots of different types of seashores. However a Rockyshore / Sandyshore is typically divided into three zones. The Intertidal zone is where most of the activity takes place. It is also affected mostly by high, mid and low tides.

10 Can you name the Zones Splash Zone: Wet by salty sea spray
Sea plants and lichens Upper Shore: A lot of time out of water Lichens, Channelled Wrack, Spiral Wrack Barnacles Middle Shore: Uncovered by water half the day Limpets, Barnacles, Bladder wrack Lower Shore: Covered by water for most of the day Saw toothed wrack, Red seaweeds, mussels, barnacles, fish, crabs Subtidal: Uncovered by water only during extremely low tides

11 The most INHOSPITABLE place on Earth to live…
Factors affecting Animals The Seashore is a VERY Inhospitable place to live: Discuss with students: Major daily changes in moisture (tides – animals having to survive in rockpools, under seaweeds, animals such as limits have developed to keep air out when stuck onto rocks – keeps their bodies moist and stops them from drying out when exposed to the sun Temperature – caused by sun, seasons, tides Turbulence - power of the ocean and waves Salinity in rockpools can increase when the tide is out When the tide is in – the animals are preyed upon by other sea animals When tide is out – the animals are preyed upon by land animals – e.g. seaguls Think about who eats who on the seashore? Major daily changes in moisture Temperature Turbulence Salinity Animals are preyed upon – when the tide is and when the tide is out
