2 Architectural Style: Folk Victorian
History: The first Folk Victorian houses built in the United States were built beginning in the mid 1800’s and remained popular until the early 1930’s. Folk Victorian homes are similar to Queen Anne Victorian homes, however; they have a much simpler floor plan, and less exterior decoration. The Folk Victorian style was popular with the “common man” because it was affordable to most homebuyers The style incorporates “gingerbread” elements under the porch roof in many cases. This “gingerbread was hand made by local craftsmen, therefore, it is common for no two Folk Victorians to be exactly the same.

3 Architectural Style: Folk Victorian
Characteristics: Folk Victorian homes are 1 or 2 story structures with a gable roof. B. Folk Victorian homes frequently have “gingerbread” trim along the roof eaves, as well as under the porch roof. C. Porch columns are usually very thin as compared to other architectural style columns. D. Floor plans are often laid out in an “L – shaped” pattern with a porch that wraps the front corner and returns back the wall formed by the “L- shape’” E. Folk Victorian homes often have bay windows with wide overhanging roofs. F. The porch roof on a Folk Victorian home is frequently flat, or very low pitched. G. Exterior veneers include brick, siding, and shakes. Some shakes are rounded or shaped with intricate patterns to create an interesting look.
