2 Childhood and early adulthood
Born on June 28, 1491 at the royal residence, Greenwich Palace, in Greenwich, London He had six siblings, but only three survived: Arthur, Margaret and Mary Arthur died at the age of 15, leaving 10-year-old Henry, the next in line for the throne When his father died in the April of 1509, he became Henry VIII, the king of England Henry had diverse appetite for art, music and culture, but he also loved gambling and he was wasteful with money

3 English reformation Henry disliked the power of the Church in England because he could not completely control it In 1534, Henry declared himself supreme head of the Church After Henry declared his supremacy, the Christian church separated, forming the Church of England He governed England through his close advisers, men who were completely dependent on him for their position England became politically a Protestant country, even though popular religion was still Catholic

Catherine of Aragon, 1509 – 1533, divorced Anne Boleyn, 1533 – 1536, executed Jane Seymour, 1536 – 1537, died Anne of Cleves, 1540 January – July, divorced Catherine Howard, 1540 – 1542, executed Catherine Parr, 1543 – 1547, widowed

5 Children of Henry VIII Edward VI (reigned from 1547 to 1553) – wanted to convert the whole country to Protestantism (the Edwardian Reformation) Mary I (reigned from 1553 to 1558) – the queen of England and Ireland, they called her Bloody Mary because of her prosecution of the Protestants Elizabeth I (reigned from 1558 to 1603) – also known as the Queen Virgin (never got married)

6 Later life and death He remained loyal to Catholic religious teaching, and executed Protestants who refused to accept it On January 28, 1547, at the age of 55, King Henry VIII of England died in London He left behind his sixth wife, Catherine Parr, and his three children He was buried in St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle alongside his third wife, Jane Seymour Henry's only surviving son, Edward, inherited the throne, becoming Edward VI
