High Mega-Pixel Display and Recording
How to best utilize high mega-pixel cameras Guy Arazi: Director of Products
2
UDERSTANDING THE NEW RESOLUTIONS
Cameras offer higher resolutions than before Each video frame is significantly larger Bandwidth is higher Storage needs are growing March , 2015 A & E Summit
3
RELATIVE FRAME SIZES 5.7 times larger than 2MP 39 times larger than D1
4
ASPECT RATIO When mega pixel cameras took us out of the VGA / D1 zone, the aspect ratio shifted Where 4:3 ratio dominated the industry in the past, wide 16:9 took the lead Some resolutions like the 12MP are still 4:3 The industry adopted wide screen monitors Good VMSs offer aspect ratio correction and allow to utilize both March , 2015 A & E Summit
5
ASPECT RATIO AND FIELD OF VIEW
12M image 4:3 8M image 16:9
6
FIELD OF VIEW AND PIXELS PER FOOT
With more pixels in every image we now can Increase the field of view Cover a wider area with each camera Still have enough Pixel per foot PPF = Picture Density = Detail March , 2015 A & E Summit
7
WHAT DOES PPF OFFER US? March , 2015 A & E Summit
8
WIDER FOV WITH SAME PPF Number of horizontal pixels on camera Number of required Pixels−per−foot = Effective horizontal FOV Example using 40ppf March , 2015 A & E Summit
9
ALWAYS USE 8MP AND 12MP? Not every camera needs to be 8 or 12MP
In some applications, these will be an expensive overkill Using these in the right area will allow maximizing their capabilities March , 2015 A & E Summit
10
WHERE NOT TO USE Typically you will not use 8 and 12MP in
Standard indoor views such as a lobby Small low details area to cover such as an office Scenes where the detail is not required March , 2015 A & E Summit
11
WHERE TO USE Scenarios that will benefit from 8 and 12MP
Requirement for forensic detail such as money counting Wide area shots such as a fence line March , 2015 A & E Summit
12
NEED TO HAVE GREAT DETAIL
March , 2015 A & E Summit
13
NEED TO ZOOM IN TO SEE BETTER
March , 2015 A & E Summit
14
NEED TO PICK REMOTE DETAILS
March , 2015 A & E Summit
15
BANDWIDTH AND STORAGE 8 and 12MP cameras have larger images
They utilize higher bandwidth and require more storage than lower resolution ones as well as require more recording resources Attention in the design will allow utilizing the cameras without overloading the system If we use the standard road and traffic analogy, if the 2MP video streams are sedans driving on the road and 5MP are SUVs, the 12MP camera is a full size truck. It takes up more space on the road and will need larger parking spots to park at night. March , 2015 A & E Summit
16
DESIGN TIPS These cameras come with a 1Gbps network port so can use a higher speed switch! If you now cover and area that would require ~3 HD cameras, you should look at total bandwidth for the system With a great picture, you can afford slightly lowering the FPS March , 2015 A & E Summit

ESTIMATED USAGE Numbers shown based on Vicon storage calculator
Cameras Resolution Compression FPS Days Bitrate (Kbits/s) Bandwidth (Mbit/s) Disk Space (GB) 1 704x480 (4CIF) H.264-M 30 1440 1.4 12 1280x720 (1 MP) 3060 3.0 25 1920x1080 (2MP) 3600 3.5 2048x1536 (3 MP) 5760 5.6 47 2600x1950 (5 MP) 7380 7.2 61 3840x2160 (8MP) 9000 8.8 74 4000x3000 (12MP) 13500 13.2 111 Numbers shown based on Vicon storage calculator March , 2015 A & E Summit

DISPLAY CHALLANGES Displaying these images requires more of the PC resources than before The total number of these cameras a PC can display is lower than smaller resolutions Older PCs (~2 years) might not be able to display these at all March , 2015 A & E Summit
19
HOW TO HANDLE DISPLAY When adding these cameras update the PCs
Utilize the camera’s secondary stream for split screen display For continues full screen displays, dedicate a decoder PC March , 2015 A & E Summit
20
DISPLAY ON 1080P MONITORS March , 2015 A & E Summit
21
DO I NEED A 4K MONITOR 8 and 12MP cameras will display on lower resolution monitors (scaled down by the PC) Using a 4K monitor can be an advantage: Displaying an 8MP camera full screen Displaying a 12MP camera full screen (slightly scaled down but less than on 1080P) Displaying P cameras in a quad March , 2015 A & E Summit
22
DISPLAY ON A 4K MONITOR March , 2015 A & E Summit
23
The new cameras offer much higher resolutions
In many applications these resolutions can bring better FOV with superior PPF Designing the system to handle these cameras well is key to utilize them well The potential forensic value these bring combined with a built for security design and pricing offer great new uses. March , 2015 A & E Summit
