1 Welcome to Summer School Math… with Mr. Martin & Ms. Fonner
*Be sure to enter class with last name and then first name: Example: Martin_Shawn Today’s Agenda: Functions & Graphing Functions

2 A one stop shop for everything…summer school! 

4 Today’s Sponsor…

5 Practical Uses for Coordinate Plane
Coordinate planes, also known as Cartesian systems, have a number of uses in practical life. Statisticians use them to depict trends. Physicists and economists use coordinate planes to show the connection between two factors. Geographers use them in mapping.

6 Vocabulary Saving the world isn’t enough, I want to help students understand the Coordinate Plane!

7 Graphing Points: Mapping Connection
What ordered pair best describes the location of Dallas, Texas?

8 Locating Points: Mapping Connection
Which location in Texas is closest to the ordered pair (-6, 1)?

9 Ready to dig in?

10 Warming Up Evaluate the expressions for the given value of the variable. 4x – 1 for x = 2 7y + 3 for y = 5 c/7 for c = 56

11 Vocabulary A function is a rule that relates two quantities so that each input value corresponds exactly to one output value.

12 Find the values of “y” Input Output y = 3x

13 Find the values of “y” Input Output y = 3x + 4

14 Checking Solutions of Equations
Check if an ordered pair is a solution of an equation by putting the x and y values into the equation to see if they make it a true statement. (5, 64) y = 12x + 4

15 Checking Solutions of Equations
Check if an ordered pair is a solution of an equation by putting the x and y values into the equation to see if they make it a true statement. (6, 4) y = 2x – 8

16 Checking Solutions of Equations
Check if an ordered pair is a solution of an equation by putting the x and y values into the equation to see if they make it a true statement. (-3, -18) y = -6x

17 Graphing Functions You can also graph the solutions of an equation on a coordinate plane. When you graph the ordered pairs of some functions, they form a straight line. The equations that express these functions are called linear equations.

18 Linear Function Use the graph of the linear function to find the value of y for the given value of x. x = 2 ( , )

19 Linear Function Use the graph of the linear function to find the value of y for the given value of x. x = 4 ( , )

20 Complete the function table
Use the given x-values to write solutions of the equation y = x + 3 as ordered pairs. x -1 1 2 y

21 (x, y) (-1, 2) (0, 3) (1, 4) (2, 5) Graphing the Function
