YOU MUST TAKE USMLE STEP 1
FROM THE STUDENT HANDBOOK: Passage of the USMLE, Step 1 is required for graduation from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. All students are required to take the exam and record a score prior to beginning Year Three. BEFORE JULY 3, 2017: YOU MUST TAKE USMLE STEP 1

Further development of clinical skills and clinical reasoning, especially those identified during the core rotations as areas for improvement Deep dive into clinical areas of personal interest Opportunity to develop skills in other areas as well This is further CLINICAL experience, NOT research or other

Y3 Selectives Selectives (Approximately 90 Options)
Longitudinal Experiences Individually Designed Selectives (IDS) No Off-Campus Selectives in Year 3 (Exception of FCM Options) Elective Credit Will Not Be Awarded In Y3

Individually-Designed Selectives
The Individually-Designed Selective (IDS) option is available to students who are interested in a course or topic for which a regular selective does not exist IDS will be considered only under special circumstances, and must be with SIU Faculty and Advisor Approval For further information regarding IDS opportunities, please refer to the Y3 Policies and Procedures and talk with your Advisor, Chris Reavis or Cherie Forsyth. Must be clinically oriented

Selectives begin on Monday End on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday – at the discretion of the faculty Holidays during selectives – at discretion of faculty

Registration / Important PEP Deadlines . . .
Week of Jan 8 - Feb 5 (Week 28-32) Meet with advisor to plan PEP schedule selections Selective Registration will close week 32 Feb 9-11 (Week 32) : Registration for your Top 3 selective choices will open at 3pm on Feb 9 and close at 8am on Feb 12. Feb (Week 33): Registration for ALL remaining selectives will open at 5pm on Feb 16 and close at 8am on Feb 19. Preliminary PEP schedules available – week 34 Schedule changes may be made prior to and throughout the PEP via Advisor approval

NOTE: Your Schedule will reflect your Course/Vacation REQUEST (3 Weeks Available) for all 15 weeks of the PEP.

PEP SCHEDULING - TIMELINE
Address Specific Problems during Open Enrollment Time: Meet with Cherie Forsyth after schedule done to “fix it” **Open Enrollment Period Ends on February 27, After that date, (wk 35) all revisions to the Y3 PEP Selective courses will require Add/Drop Approval**

All selectives require students to maintain a logbook of patient encounters

PEP Evaluations Performance Evaluation for Selectives Satisfactory; Unsatisfactory or Incomplete NO honors UNS stays on transcript Incomplete becomes Unsatisfactory if not completed Unsatisfactory on transcript can affect licensure to practice medicine!
