2
Background Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. Can be petty (low and mid level officials) or grand (high ranking officials). Corruption can cost people lives, freedom, health and money
3
Main Goals of Our Project
Explore corruption value data for countries around the world. Examine how corruption affects society by environmental, political, and social standards.
4
Objectives Develop a composite indicator composed of: CO2 emissions
Forest cover Educational expenditure (as % of total govt. spending) Military expenditure (as % of total govt. spending) HDI Poverty ratio Incarceration rates This indicator is called the Social Standing Indicator.
5
Objectives Compare our composite indicator to the Transparency International perceived corruption index to determine if corruption plays a role in a society. Comparison based on a selection of countries, chosen due to a wide range of corruption values, and geographical range. China Indonesia Malaysia Mexico Brazil Uruguay Sweden Italy Kenya South Africa

Conclusion Weak correlation between the Corruption perceptions index and our developed Social Standing Indicator There is not a relationship between the two indices Corruption perceptions index and composite index are not full representations of corruption on all levels due to the splitting up of the data and inability to factor in every possible contributor to corruption.
21
Conclusion Limitations:
The individual indicators that we chose may not be an accurate representation of social standing Missing data for countries in individual indicators Data is not available for same year, so some indicators have data originating from different years
