Motivation Motivation that comes from within the individual is called intrinsic motivation. The manipulation motive drives a person to handle and play with objects. Stomach contractions, taste, and low glucose level all cause hunger.

Emotions Emotional intelligence is when a person understands and controls their emotions. The James-Lange theory believes people react, then feel emotions. 8

Consciousness & Unseen Forces
A construct (concept requiring a belief in something that cannot be seen or touched, but that seems to exist) is consciousness. A circadian rhythm makes high & low tides of the earth/temperatures in humans & allows certain flowers to open and close each day.

Sleep Before drifting off to sleep, the relaxed, free-floating feeling we experience is caused by alpha waves. The deepest stage of sleep is marked by delta waves. Night terrors occur most often during a state of NREM. An elderly person experiences less REM time than teenagers

Sleep Disorders Someone who suffers from sleep apnea often stops breathing while sleeping.

Dreams Strange dreams are random firing of memory circuits.

States of Consciousness
It is possible that hypnosis can make you feel a decrease in pain, help you focus on an event from your past, and make you feel relaxed. Meditation contributes to a decrease in heart rate.
