Be the Scientist! Ms. Emma Anderson Neverland Elementary School November 2014
2
Question 1 Imagine you’re a paleontologist (a dinosaur scientist), looking for fossils in North America. You come across a skull that looks like the picture on this slide. You, as a scientist, make observations in order to draw conclusions. Take notice of the three horns and lack of sharp teeth. Which kind of dinosaur is this?
3
What kind of dinosaur do you think it is?
A. Tyrannosaurs Rex (Ty-ran-o-sore-us) B. Ankylosaurus (Ank-lo-saur-us) C. Triceratops (Tri-cer-uh-tops) D. Velociraptor (Vi-law-so-rap-tor)
4
The correct answer is… Triceratops!
The triceratops is famous for having three (tri) distinctive horns on its massive head. Also, it’s a herbivore (plant-eating) dinosaur, so it has no need for sharp teeth. Did you know? -The triceratops had horns to defend itself from predators like the Tyrannosaurus Rex. -They are Ms. Anderson’s favorite dinosaur!
5
Question 2 You’re a paleontologist in western North America, specifically Montana. You’ve found a fossil of a dinosaur tail like the picture on this slide. You notice the tail’s odd shape. It looks rather heavy, and as if it could have been used as a way for the dinosaur to defend itself. What kind of dinosaur is this?
6
What kind of dinosaur do you think it is?
A. Ankylosaurus B. Stegosaurus (Steg-0-sore-us) C. Iguanadon (Ee-gua-na-don) D. Brontosaurus (Bront-0-sore-us)
7
The correct answer is… Ankylosaurus!
The Ankylosaurus is well known for having a large club-like tail and huge plates of bone armor, which it used to defend itself. Did you know? -A complete Ankylosaurus skeleton has never been found.
8
What kind of dinosaur do you think it is?
A. Brontosaurus B. Carnotaurus (Car-no-tore-us) C. Tyrannosaurus Rex D. Velociraptor
9
The correct answer is… Velociraptor!
The Velociraptor was small and fast, with fearsome claws and excellent eyesight. All of these things made it a formidable predator and carnivore (meat-eating). Did you know? -The Velociraptor is very famous due to its role in the Jurassic Park movies. -Velociraptor means “swift plunderer”

Question 4 The sun is setting in South America, and you along with your team of fellow paleontologists are getting ready to call it a day. However, your friend calls out to you that she’s found one more fossil! The fossil she’s found looks much like the picture on this slide. You take special care to notice the unique horns on the head, the massive size of the skull, and the large sharp teeth. Which dinosaur is this? (Hint: It’s not a T-Rex)
11
What kind of dinosaur do you think it is?
A. Stegosaurus B. Carnotaurus C. Brontosaurus D. Triceratops
12
The correct answer is… Carnotaurus!
Carnotaurus kind of looks like a T-Rex, except it has unique horns on its head and almost useless arms. It is a massive carnivore, weighing almost a metric ton. Did you know? -Carnotaurus means “meat-eating bull” -Ms. Anderson has personally seen a Carnotaurus fossil at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as gotten up close and personal with an animatronic version.
13
Congratulations! You’re all now honorary paleontologists.
