Thorny Devil By Ziggy and Ryan C
2
Definition Thorny devils have four legs that are square like coming out from the body so they can run very fast across sand and rock to catch their prey their skin is able to soak in water which channels to their mouth so they can drink water without using their mouth so they can absorb more water than if they just drank through their mouths used their mouths. Thorny devils can also change the colour of their skin depending on the temperature if it is cold they will absorb heat better because they turn to darker colours and when warm they will stay cooler because they change to lighter colours which reflect the sun and they can also camouflage against the sand to hide from predators to camouflage against the background. Thorny Devils are small lizards that are covered in spikes, they can grow to 20 cm and they can live for over 20 years. The females are larger than the males. They have a triangular head which has thorns pointing backwards just behind the eye line they only eat ants and nothing else. They have a long tail and all the spikes are growing at an angle out to the side of their bodies. They have four arms with 5 toes on each leg.

Diet Thorny Devils live on a diet of nothing but small black ants. They feed in the cooler mornings and late afternoon. When they locate a trail of ants they licks them up with their short, sticky tongue. Scientists calculate that Thorny Devils might eat a thousand or more ants in a single meal Their bodies are entirely covered with mostly unclarified conical spines which even extend up to their tails. They have spiny horn-like structures above their eyes and a spiny bump behind their head that acts like a false-head. Dragonflies, Damselflies, Cockroaches, Termites, Mantids, Stick/leaf insects, Grasshoppers, locust Crickets, katydids Thorny devils can eat 1000 small black ants it also has a very sticky tongue. It can also eat as many as 5000 in one meal.

Adaptations Fake head (Thorny devils do face with a predator, they tuck their real heads and reveal a fake head. This is essentially a ball of spikes located behind their actual heads. Inflates itself (When Face with a predator it makes itself bigger by having a lot of air in its chest to make it bigger and harder to swallow) Colour (the thorny devils scales changes colours due to seasonal change. Also different temperature change affect them) Sticky tongue (this help when eating because the ants that it eats gets stuck to the tongue so they can eat about a 1000 ants at a time. It can also eat as many as 5000 in one meal. Spikes (Because the Thorny devil’s thorns/spikes on its back help it to ward off predators in its environment. It has an extra protuberance on the back of its head which may appear to be another head to would-be predators. The spikes also have another ability that is to help channel water towards the Thorny devil’s mouth. Water which lands on the devil's back. Whether it be overnight condensation or rain, runs along tiny grooves on the animal’s body to the corner of its mouth. It moves long these grooves by a capillary action set in motion when gulping. The Thorny devil will also rub itself against vegetation in the early morning to collect condensation on its thorns/spikes. Colour (it can be orange, yellow or black. These colours are good for the environment because they camouflage)

Adaptations continued
The length of the Thorny devil’s babies is about millimetres long. The thorny devil's scales change colour due to the seasonal change. Also differences temperature change affect them. If the Thorny devils do face with a predator, they tuck their real heads and reveal a fake head. This is essentially a ball of spikes located behind their actual heads Because the Thorny devils thorns/spikes on its back help it to ward off predators in its environment. It has a extra protuberance on the back of its head which may appear to be another head to would-be predators. The Thorny devil will also rub itself against vegetation in the early morning to collect condensation on its thorns/spikes. The Thorny devil's colour can be orange/yellow and black. It is perfect for blending in its desert environment. The female thorny devil lay 3-10 eggs. Usually 8 in November and December. The Thorny devil's spines and an impermeable skin to save all the water in it, it also secretes urine that has all the water taken out by a special function liver. The water is mainly absorbed through the skin and when it's in its burrow the walls trap the water lost by respiration, then the devil can collect the water again. The Thorny devil's predators are brown falcons, bustards (type of Bird) snakes, larger lizards such as goannas. The Thorny devils are a very slow animal. When Face with a predator it makes itself bigger by having a lot of air in its chest to make it bigger and harder to swallow

Experiment For our experiment we used double sided tape, a container, timer and soup mix. We used our hands without the double sided tape and we got about seeds, we had a timer and settled at 20 seconds and that’s how we got seeds. When we used the double sided tape we got about seeds we putted the seeds in the container while having no sticky tape and sticky tape and the timer was going.
