Lesson 1 How is Motion Measured? Text Pages B46-B48

Vocabulary speed: a measure of how far something travels in a certain period of time kilometers per hour: the number of kilometers something can travel in one hour velocity: a measure of speed in a certain direction

Speed To find speed, you must know two important things.
how far you are traveling (distance) how long you are taking to travel that distance (time) We can use an equation to help us find the speed of an object. Speed = Distance Time

Math?. . .Science?. . .BOTH! One way we measure how fast something moves is in terms of kilometers per hour (km/hr) or miles per hour (mph). kilometers per hour = the number of kilometers an object moves in one hour miles per hour = the number of miles an object moves in one hour To make these scientific measurements, we need to use Math.

Speed = Distance / Time Use the equation above to solve each of the following problems. A boat is traveling a distance of 50 kilometers in 2 hours. What is the boat’s speed?

Speed = Distance / Time Use the equation above to solve each of the following problems. 2. A car is traveling at a speed of 30 miles per hour. If the car travels a distance of 60 miles, how many hours will the trip take?

Speed = Distance / Time Use the equation above to solve each of the following problems. 3. A bus travels for 5 hours at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour. How much distance can the bus cover?

Average Speed When we say an object travels 60 miles per hour, we do not mean that it travels at exactly that speed the whole time. Sometimes the object may go a little faster than 60 miles per hour. Other times the object may go a little slower than 60 miles per hour. The fast parts and slow parts combine to create an average speed.

Velocity Velocity is different from speed.
Velocity = a measure of speed in a certain direction Objects can travel at the same speed, but if they are traveling in different directions, they will have different velocities.

Velocity Each time an object changes direction, even if it’s speed stays the same, it changes velocity.

Velocity When we measure velocity, we give both the speed and direction. 45 mph west 60 km/hr north 5 4 6 3 7

Velocity When we measure velocity, we give both the speed and direction. 45 mph west 60 km/hr north 4 4 6 4 5 4 3 7 3 3 7 5

Velocity When we measure velocity, we give both the speed and direction. 45 mph west 60 km/hr north 4 4 6 4 5 4 3 7 3 3 7 5

Put it all together! How can you use distance and time to find speed?
How is velocity different from speed? What could cause a change in velocity?
