1 Catalyst: Name as many types of graphs as you can!
Graphing in Robotics 8) Catalyst: Name as many types of graphs as you can!

2 Agenda Graphing in Robotics Graphing Practice

3 Useful Abbreviations Independent (manipulated) Variable (IV) – The variable in the investigation that is being changed. Dependent (responding) Variable (DV) – The variable in the investigation that is being measured. TAILS – Title, Axes, Intervals, Labels, Scale

4 Objective NGSS – Practice 4
(1) Communicate data through tables and graphs. (2) Create appropriate graphs based on data.

5 What are the parts of a graph?

6 What are the parts of a graph?
Title Y-axis X-axis

7 Setting up the Graph Graph Parts Title Y-Axis
|__________________________ X-axis

8 What are the parts of a graph?
X-axis = IV(MV)

9 What are the parts of a graph?
Y-axis = DV(RV) X-axis = IV(MV)

10 What are the parts of a graph?
Title = DV vs. IV Y-axis = DV(RV) X-axis = IV(MV)

11 Graphing in Robotics 10.06.2015 Graph Parts Title Y-Axis
|__________________________ X-axis X-axis = Independent (IV)Variable (ex: Day #) Y-axis = Dependent Variable (DV) (ex: Amount of Rain in cm) Title = DV vs. IV (ex: Amount of Rain vs. Day #)

12 Example Average Weekly Television Watching in Hours
% Students Turning in HW 3 98 4 80 5.4 60 7.5 40 8 20

13 What is the Independent (manipulated) Variable?
Average Weekly Television Watching in Hours % Students Turning in HW 3 98 4 80 5.4 60 7.5 40 8 20

14 What is the Dependent (Responding) Variable?
Average Weekly Television Watching in Hours % Students Turning in HW 3 98 4 80 5.4 60 7.5 40 8 20

15 What would the title of the graph be?
Average Weekly Television Watching in Hours % Students Turning in HW 3 98 4 80 5.4 60 7.5 40 8 20

16 Example Average Weekly Television Watching in Hours
% Students Turning in HW 3 98 4 80 5.4 60 7.5 40 8 20

17 TAILS ✔ list Title – Does your title have the DV and IV in the correct order? Axes – Do you have the independent and dependent variables on the appropriate axes. Intervals – Are the axes evenly spaced out and not crowded? Labels – Are the axes labeled with units (cm, L, s, kg, etc.)? Scale – Does your data fit your entire graph?

18 Graphing in Robotics Data in correct location
Graph ✔ List Data in correct location Axes labeled with units (cm, L, s, kg, etc.) Axes evenly spaced out Accurate title Correct graph type

19 Quick Practice (Left Page)
Copy this table down and create a line graph for it! Fertilizer Amount in (mg) - IV Plant Height in (cm) - DV 5 10 13 15 20

20 Quick Practice (Left Page)
Fertilizer Amount in (mg) - IV Plant Height in (cm) - DV 5 10 13 15 20

21 Graph Types Vs.

22 Graph Types Line Graph - Use when the IV changes amount (day #, amount of fertilizer, etc)

23 Graphing in Robotics Graph Types
- Line Graph - Use when the IV changes amount (day #, amount of fertilizer, etc)

24 Graph Types Bar Graph - Use when the IV changes type (person name, color of flower, etc.)

25 Graphing in Robotics Graph Types Line Graph - Use when the IV changes amount (day #, amount of fertilizer, etc) Bar Graph - Use when the IV changes type (person name, color of flower, etc.)

26 Summary Take 3 minutes to write a summary of today’s notes!
