Research Into Practice
Dr David Dobel-Ober Debbie Moores
2
Purpose of the research process
Maintain evidence-based practice Service development Support innovation Challenge conventional practice Hearing the service user’s voice
3
Initiating the process
Origin of the question? Personal interest Service led Service user led Response to tender Context Course, personal development Internal funding External funding
4
Research Process Turning an idea into a research question
Collecting information and reviewing the literature Designing the study and deciding on the methods Writing a research proposal and study outline Obtaining the relevant approval Collecting and collating data Analysing and making sense of the results Writing the report Disseminating the findings & influencing practice Seeking funding
5
Research, Audit or Evaluation?1
Research (NHS) Randomised? Change of treatment? Generalisable? David
6
Research, Audit or Evaluation?2
Are we doing what we should be doing? Does it meet standard? (pre-defined) Not generalisable (small population, specific context) No randomisation Not looking at causality
7
Research, Audit or Evaluation?3
Evaluation (summative - formative) Which standard does it meet? Does it work? Why / how does it work? (causality) Not generalisable (small population, specific context) No randomisation
8
Ethics Rule of thumb: if there are ethical issues in any project, it needs to be seen by ethics committee (vulnerable population, sensitive area) Research = full ethics process or proportionate review in some circumstances (e.g. questionnaire or interview research that does not include highly sensitive areas)

VdT MoCA Vona Du Toit- Model of Creative Ability
Choice of implementing MoCA Identified by OT Potential to address issues identified in the Trust Tested multi disciplinary cohort of 27 (2 days training +1 extra day for OTs, 2014) Evaluation: focussed on the views of staff immediately and 3 months after training) Didn’t look at clinical outcomes
10
VdT MoCA: Key findings:
After 3 months: Staff able to apply the model Better understanding of service users’ needs Improved engagement & one-to-one sessions Issues: Lack of awareness / understanding amongst other staff Not appropriate for service users with PD or eating disorder Additional OT support would increase take-up of MoCA Peer support groups complement to the training programme Difficult to implement & embed new practice model without protected time for planning & additional study
11
VdT MoCA: recommendations
Pilot training for a whole ward (all staff) Project coordinator (activity boxes available, consistency in the way MoCA is applied) Peer support groups Specific training or advice on applying MoCA to PD
12
VdT MoCA: Impact of evaluation
2015: 4 cohorts will receive training 2 in South Staffs / 2 in Shropshire Multidisciplinary The OTs from the 2014 cohort will take part in the day specific to OTs (CPD)

Designing the study and deciding on the methods
What would you do… Turning an idea into a research question Designing the study and deciding on the methods
14
Group discussion 1 Chose an area of research
Turn an idea into a research question Formulate a clear and concise question that can be managed within one project
15
Group discussion 2 Design a study and choose appropriate methods for one of the three research questions Establish key aims and objectives Define hypothesis Decide on methods (considering scientific, ethical and practical issues) Design basic protocol
16
Group discussion 3 Undertake peer review of one of the 3 protocols
Consider Ethical issues Value of the question Scientific quality (is the project likely to achieve its aim?)
17
Debbie Communication Dissemination. Different formats – reports, meetings, supervision. Influence At all levels – clinical experts delivering results. Difference it makes to service users and staff. Leadership Essential! At all levels - clinical leadership, professional leadership. Modelling, championing. Training Train and ongoing support to gain confidence and competence. Commitment Executive sign up. Service Directors. Clinical staff.
