Delay the age of first sexual intimacy. Limit the number of sexual partners. Avoid using alcohol and other drugs. Avoid sharing needles and other equipment for drug injection, body piercing, or tattooing. Avoid sexual intimacy with high-risk partners. Get tested for STDs and HIV. Use male latex condoms.

18 GET TESTED If you think you may have been exposed to an STD or HIV, get tested. Confidentiality is a legal requirement that prohibits healthcare providers from revealing patients’ names or test results. Doctors usually test for several STDs at once. HIV testing may be done separately. If the STD can be treated, the doctor will prescribe medications. Avoid all sexual activity while you are infected.
