Dept. of EEE RVCE, Bangalore

2 Introduction Photovoltaic (PV) power technology uses semiconductor cells (wafers), generally several square centimetres in size. A solar cell, from solid-state physics point of view, is a large are PN junction diode with the junction positioned close to its surface. It converts sunlight into direct power (DC). Numerous such cells are assembled and connected in series and/or parallel to obtain the required voltage, current and power. The PV installation, for the most part, is static, does not need large constructions, produces no vibration or noise, and needs no active cooling mechanism.

4 Working of Solar PV - Home

5 PV Module prices We still use crystalline semiconductor material for most PV cells and hence the cost of production is relatively more. The capital cost of PV module per watt has reduced in recent years. In the U. S, the capital cost of PV modules has reduced from $20 per watt (1980) to less than $4 per watt (2004). During the years , the cost of energy has also declined from $1 to almost 20 cents per unit and reduced to around 20 cents per unit in 2010.

16 BTI India Solar Module Price Index
BTI India’s module price index for March 31, 2017 is INR 22/ Wp (US 33¢/ Wp). BRIDGE TO INDIA (BTI) is launching India Solar Price Indices, a series of indices to track and monitor key price trends in the Indian solar market. BTI aims to get pricing information by conducting interviews with a diversified group of 6-10 leading project developers, EPC contractors and module suppliers. Final pricing is obtained by taking a simple average of all responses while ignoring any outliers.

17 BTI India Inverter Price Index
BTI India’s inverter price index for March 31, 2017 is INR 1.9/ Wp.

18 BTI India Solar EPC Price Index
BTI India’s Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) price index for March 31, 2017 is INR 35/ Wp.

19 BTI India Solar Rooftop EPC Price Index
BTI India’s rooftop solar EPC price index for March 31, 2017 is INR 45/ Wp.

24 Indian Solar Growth (Cells and Modules)

25 Indian Solar Growth (Cells and Modules)

26 Advantages of PV Power Short lead times to design, install and start up a new plant Highly modular – plant economy is not strongly dependent on plant size Power output matches well will peak load demands Static structure, no moving parts; hence no noise High power capability per unit of weight Longer life with little maintenance because of no moving parts Highly mobile and portable because of portable structure At present, PV power is extensively used in stand-alone power systems in remote villages around the world, particularly in hybrid systems with diesel power generators.
