1 Warden Hill Infant School
Maths Activity Workshops

2 Diennes We use Diennes to help us understand place value and for adding and taking away numbers.

3 Using jottings for Addition
= 59

4 Using jottings for Subtraction
= 114

5 Inverse The pupil can recognise the inverse relationships between addition and subtraction Pupils can use this to check calculations and work out missing number problems Δ − 14 = 28 = 42

6 Fractions Children need to be able to find fractions of a length, a shape and a set of objects and understand the role of the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). First children find half (½) or a quarter (¼) of an amount by sharing objects: Children move on to using jottings (images, pictorial representations) as below: 1/3 of 6 = 2 ● ● ● ½ of 8 =4 ¼ of 8 =2

7 ¼, ½, ¾, 1 Children need to be able to count in fractions eg:
And explain that: Can your child tell you ½ of any even number to 24? 1/5 of any multiple of 5 up to 60?

8 Can children work out the problem by selecting the correct operation?
Problem Solving Can children work out the problem by selecting the correct operation? There are 20 balloons 7 fly balloons fly away. How many balloons left?

9 Problem Solving The pupil can solve word problems that involve more than one step. Which has the most biscuits, 4 packets of biscuits with 5 in each packet or 3 packets of biscuits with 10 in each packet?

10 Multiplication Children should be able to understand and calculate multiplication as repeated addition supported by practical resources as below: Children show how multiplication calculations can be represented by an array using practical apparatus and jottings to support their understanding: = = 15

11 Repeated addition can easily be shown on a number line:
5 x 3 =

12 Commutativity Children should know that 3 x 5 has the same answer as 5 x 3 and can be represented on a number line and also using jottings: Jottings to show 3 x 4 = 12 4 x 3 = 12

13 Thank you for coming today. We hope the session has been informative.
Please complete the evaluation form. Don’t forget to take a Parent/Carer’s Guide home with you.
