SWE-FL Task Force Update FY12 BOD2 Lana Fountain Flakes Director of Membership Initiatives
2
Task Force Points of Discussion
Program Expansion Members of the TF question the efficacy of the CLF (specifically the Society Level) in training the casual collegiate member. Outreach is limited to a small group Costly, time-consuming event Roster of SWE-FL Participants has historically been collegiate members that have already shown a strong interest in SWE – in many cases are already SWE Collegiate Leaders in some capacity With technological advances, could a ‘virtual’ SWE-FL Program be an alternative for expansion; reaching casual members; & reducing costs? Could delivery of SWE-FL Training be expanded over multiple years? Keeps the SWE-FL engaged in SWE across their college career Creates opportunities for contributions to multiple areas of SWE Professional SWE-FL Program How do we make this program a value-add to a member’s overall professionalism? Many other organizations/companies offer defined leadership programs – how would SWE’s differ from other programs offered? Is this not-for-profit leadership training? Is this executive leadership training? Is this simply an expansion of SWE’s Executive Summit? WExx) Do we already have this covered & need to brand it under a professional SWE-FL Program?

Task Force: Selection Process Recommendation
Original process Led by CLF Coordinator Sent out call for nominations, via eblast from HQ Nominators filled out Survey Monkey nomination form (SWEFLs could self-nominate, but it was discouraged) CLF Coordinator reviewed all nominations and ranked candidates within each region Rankings were based on SWE leadership, other leadership activities, Nominator statements, school (often SWEFLs were selected from schools with struggling SWE sections to try to reinvigorate their sections), Nominator (RG nominations generally given higher priority over fellow classmates) In addition to individual attributes, the Coordinator tried to make overall selections based on a diverse class of SWEFLs as a whole -- variety in majors, SWE positions, participants from big schools and small schools, etc. CLF Coordinator sent out ranking for review by other CIC/CLF team members
4
Task Force: Selection Process Recommendation
Top X SWEFLs (X=# of spaces available for SWEFLs at CLF based on budget) were informed of their selection and asked of their availability Next set of highest ranked SWEFLs was informed they were on the Waiting List If a selected SWEFL was not available to attend CLF, the next ranked SWEFL within their region on the Waiting List was informed, and so on until all available spots were filled
5
Task Force: Selection Process Recommendation
Proposed Changes for Selection Process CLF Coordinator, CLF Coordinator-Elect, and 2 members of the Membership Committee Each member of the selection committee reviews 3-4 regions and picks their top ~3 candidates, with each region being reviewed by 2-3 selection committee members A rubric scorecard will be used to score candidates to get top 3-4 per region Region Governors provide input as to their top candidates Priority is given to schools that had not had a SWEFL in the past Selection of top candidate is subjective based on rubric score, RG input, and desire for diversity across selected SWEFLs
6
Task Force: Selection Process Recommendation
Score 5 3 1 A. Has the nominee attend CLF in the past? 2 B. Are other members of this section attending CLF this year? no one RCCE RCR or Senator C. Have members from your section attended CLF in the past? never 3+years last yr 1- Is the nominee currently in a SWE leadership position? If yes, what is their role? Region position (including committee), Section Council Local Section Leader (Committee) incomplete 2- Why do you believe the nominee has great potential for future SWE leadership? judges discretion 3- How would attendance at the Collegiate Leadership Forum benefit the nominee as an individual and as a SWE member? Judges Discretion points
7
Advantages of Proposed Selection Process
Dedicated review team lends to a more comprehensive, informed review process Final selection of SWE-FL tends to be less RG Influence Heavy Preset, defined criteria that reduces variation in the evaluation process CLF Coordinator workload is significantly reduced Spreads the SWE-FL ‘Wealth’ among schools
8
Task Force Points of Discussion (cont)
Diversity What elements are important to ensure diversification in SWE-FL participants? School Size Major Class Level SWE Leadership Position How do we go about achieving that diversity? Do we modify our program make-up to specify ‘X # shall be ---’ Have we identified any underrepresented groups? How do we attract underrepresented groups to the program? How can we involve our joint members in the SWE-FL programs?
9
Task Force Points of Discussion (cont)
Training Are we providing the right type of training? Are SWE-FLs satisfied with the training they’re getting? Could/Should the Curriculum Committee/CLCC be involved in curriculum that is developed for SWE-FLs? Ownership Has historically been owned by the CLF Coordinator If expanded beyond the Society-Level, who then is the owner? Define the full set of responsibilities for this person/persons; reportability structure; & qualifications Budget Should SWE-FLs pay? What percentage? Is the program valuable enough in the long run to make them willing to pay? Is this something they can truly add to their resume? Fundraising? SWE-FL Scholarships? Stipends to attend conference? What are the monetary rewards (if any) of being a SWE-FL?
10
Task Force Points of Discussion (cont)
Tracking Who’s responsible? Packaging the Successes What’s the right technique? What’s an appropriate frequency? Can we link the C2C Member Category to the ‘Tracking’ Component? What’s the metric for success of the program? SWE-FL Alumnae You’re a SWE-FL Alumnae – Now What? Mentoring other SWE-FLs Cascading Down to the Section Level Assigning to CLCC
