Precision Measurement
Vernier Calipers and Micrometers in Metric and Imperial M.Friesen 2017
2
Vernier Calipers STANDARD DIAL DIGITAL Metric/Imperial Metric/Imperial
3
Standard Comes in Metric and Imperial measurements with scales on the top and bottom.
Main Scale Vernier Scale Sizes can range from 6” (15cm) – 12” (30cm)
4
HOW TO READ METRIC 10 mm 0.02mm 0.10 mm
5
Closest measurable tolerance
READING METRIC 20 mm + 1 mm + 0.02 mm = 21.02mm 0.02mm Closest measurable tolerance
6
HOW TO READ IMPERIAL (Decimal)
0.001 Inch 0.10 Inch (4 x 0.025”) 1 Inch (10 x 0.100”)
7
READING IMPERIAL (Decimal)
1.000” + 0.050” + 0.023” = ”
8
DIAL CALIPERS
9
HOW TO READ METRIC Instead of a sliding Vernier Scale, a dial caliper uses a dial. Each increment is 0.01mm ANSWER? 16.20mm
10
HOW TO READ IMPERIAL 1.682” This Imperial dial is divided in half.
Each increment is 0.001” You could also find both Metric and Imperial dials that are not divided. ANSWER? 1.682”
11
DIGITAL CALIPERS Can be changed from Metric to Imperial by the push of a button
12
MICROMETERS Standard Micrometer Metric/Imperial
Vernier Style Micrometer
13
THE PARTS OF A MICROMETER
Metric or Imperial
14
For a micrometer to work effectively we need to know the approximate size before using this precision instrument
15
READING METRIC 0 – 25mm 0.01mm 5mm + 0.50mm + 0.28mm = 5.78mm
16
READING METRIC WITH A VERNIER SCALE
0 – 25mm 0.001mm 5 5mm + 0.50mm + 0.28mm + 0.003mm = 5.783mm
17
Lines in between dollars = QUARTERS
READING IMPERIAL 0 – 1” 0.001” 0 – 24 = CENTS 0.001 Lines in between dollars = QUARTERS 0.025 Large numbers = DOLLARS 0.100
18
READING IMPERIAL 0 – 1” 0.001” .200” + 0.075” + 0.001” = ”
19
READING IMPERIAL WITH A VERNIER SCALE
0 – 1” 0.0001” 0.2000”+ 0.0750”+ 0.0090” + 0.0005” = ”
