1 Civil Rights Movement

2 Objective Students will analyze primary source speeches, photographs, and video clips in order to understand the events of the Civil Rights movement. At station 1, they will analyze JFK’s June 11th Speech in order to understand how the Civil Right movement was handled from the political aspect. At station 3, they will analyze the riot photographs in order to understand how the activist/protestors were treated on a local judicial level. At stations 2 and 4, they will analyze the MLK and Malcom X speeches in create comparisons between the two different philosophies of the Civil Rights Activists.

3 Warm Up Take 3minutes and Consider what you know about the Civil Rights Movement, do you think that the Movement made the leaders or the leaders made the movement? This will be collected.

4 Stations Count off by 4 Station 1: JFK Speech video
Station 2: Malcolm X Speech Excerpt Station 3: Race Riot Photographs Station 4: MLK Speech Transcript Each Station will last 10 minutes. Make sure that you complete the worksheet questions for that station. Group discussion is encouraged!

5 Feelings Check Did we meet our objectives?

6 Homework Read Fannie Lou Hamer’s Testimony Before the Credentials Committee, Democratic National Convention. First research who Fannie Lou Hamer was and write me a short biography of her (1-2 paragraphs). Then write a short essay (2-3 paragraphs) describing what they feel was the greatest contribution Fannie Lou Hamer to US history one paragraph must specifically refer to the Civil Rights Movement. Formal citation isn’t necessary, but make sure I know your source. (e.g. On Mississippi History Now Ms. Hamer was described as …) Due 4/27/15.
