1 Systematic Theology I Angelology – Part II

2 Satan What is the value of studying what the Bible teaches about Satan? It enables believers to know their enemy and learn how to combat him. It properly cautions believers to not underestimate their foe. It prevents believers from the extreme pessimism of philosophical dualism because, though Satan is extremely crafty, he is still subject to Almighty God and his doom is sure.

3 The Names of Satan Satan (52x) – adversary. He opposes God and His people. Devil (Diablos; 35x) – slanderer. According to Rev 12:9-10 he slanders the saints before God day and night. Beelzebub or Beelzebul – ruler of the demons. Mark 3:22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, "He is possessed by Beelzebul," and "He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons." Belial – exact meaning uncertain, but the idea is the embodiment of evil. 2 Corinthians 6:15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? The Deceiver – This is his life-long occupation. Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Other titles include serpent (2 Cor 11:3; Rev 12:9), tempter (Matt 4:3), the evil one (John 17:15; 1 John 2:14), prince of this world (John 12:31), god of this world (2 Cor 4:4), prince of the power of the air (Eph 2:2), and dragon (Rev 12, 13, 16, 20).

4 The Origin of Satan He was originally created as a holy angel, perhaps occupying the highest position among them before he rebelled. Isaiah 14:1-20 and Ezek 28:1-19 may be describing both human kings and the energizing force behind them. There is no question that pride and the desire to displace the true God led to Satan’s downfall (Gen 3:4-5; Matt 4:8-9).

5 Satan as a Personal Being
In the Bible Satan is always portrayed as a real person. Every NT writer mentions him. Of the 29 references to Satan in the Gospels, 25 come from Christ Himself. Satan is described as having intellect and emotion (Rev 12:12), volition (Matt 4:9) and the ability to speak (Job 1; Matt 4). Satan will ultimately be held accountable, judged, and punished for eternity.

6 The Career of Satan He began his existence as a holy angel.
He rebelled against God, taking a third of the angels with him (Rev 12:3-4). He is presently the god of this world (2 Cor 4:4) and the prince of the power of the air (Eph 2:1-2), with limited access to God’s presence (Job 1:6; 2:1). He will be thrown down to earth during the Tribulation and wreak great havoc during the last half of that period (Rev 12:7-9; 13-17). After the Tribulation he will be bound in the abyss for 1000 years (Rev 20:1-3). After the millennium he will be released for a short time and lead a final rebellion against Christ in Jerusalem (Rev 20:7-9). He will finally by cast into the lake of fire with his angels, to endure the wrath of God forever (Matt 25:41; Rev 20:10). This is a little different from McCune.

7 The Work of Satan He slanders God and opposes His plan (Gen 3:4-5).
He slanders and opposes the nation of Israel (Zech 3:1-2; Rev 12:1-6,13-17) as well as other believers (Rev 12:10). He counterfeits God’s work, posing as an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14-15). He sows tares among believers (Matt 13:38-39).

8 Evil Angels/Demons The Origin of Evil Angels
As has been noted already, evil angels fell with Satan at his rebellion. Demonic activity shows up in the OT first (e.g., Gen 6:1-4; Lev 17:7; Deu 32:16-17). Demons stand behind all false religions. The Organization of Evil Angels There is apparently a defined hierarchy, based on such terms as thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities, and principalities. The Work of Evil Angels They continually oppose the people of God. They are the powers against whom believers do spiritual battle (Eph 6:10-18). They also oppose the work of good angels (Dan 10:13, 20). They can enter the bodies of both humans and animals (Mark 5:6-13) and can thereby inflict physical maladies (Mark 9:17, 25). They have the power to do supernatural works (Exod 7:8-22; 2 Thess 2:8-9) and bring about false doctrine and worship (1 Tim 4:1). Both Satan and his demons are always subject to the sovereignty of God.

9 New Testament Outbreak of Demonic Activity
There was a virtual explosion of demonic and satanic activity in the gospels. This is very logical, in light of Satan’s goal to thwart the plan of God through Christ. Christ’s miracles were often attacks against Satan and his kingdom, showing that He had the power to overcome that kingdom and establish His own. Matthew 12: "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Or how can anyone enter the strong man's house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house."

10 Demon Possession The Concept The Characteristics
Demon possession means that the demon has such control and dominion over a person that he cannot be resisted. The Characteristics A person can be victimized by one or more demons (Mark 5:9; Luke 8:2). Control is such that there is an intermingling of egos between the demon and the victim, such that the demon actually speaks through the person (Luke 4:34; Mark 5:7). Symptoms of mental and or physical distress are often present.

11 Demon Possession The Christian and Demon Possession
Believers cannot be possessed by demons for the following reasons: The believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and cannot therefore be indwelt at the same time by a demon. The believer has the guarding presence and protection of the Son of God (1 John 5:18). Satan has already been defeated by the cross work of Christ (Col 2:15). Believers are therefore freed from Satanic control. Demon possession requires complicity, and a Spirit-indwelt believer would not so comply. Demon Possession in the NT Epistles and Today Cases of demon possession in the Gospels and Acts are very clear. There is no teaching concerning demon possession and how to deal with it in the epistles. Our main strategy against Satan is to resist him (James 4:7; 1 Pet 5:8-9), employing the armor of God to do so (Eph 6:10-20). Believers can be tempted, attacked, and harassed, but not possessed.

12 The Judgment of Evil Angels
Scripture says that certain evil angels are already judged and confined (Luke 8:31; 2 Pet 2:4; Jude 1:6; Rev 9:1-11). All evil angels will ultimately be judged and cast into the lake of fire (Matt 25:41).
