2 Some children go to church on Christmas Eve.

3 Children hang stockings at the end of their beds or above the fireplace for Santa (Sion Corn) to fill. They leave carrots and mince pies for Santa and Rudolph.

4 Most children share their Christmas with family, enjoying time with Grandparents .

5 For Christmas dinner most Welsh families eat vegetables (especially sprouts), turkey, gravy, stuffing, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and cranberry sauce.

6 People usually have a Christmas pudding for dessert
People usually have a Christmas pudding for dessert. Alcohol is poured over it and set alight.

9 Plygain – an old Welsh Christmas Day custom
Plygain – an old Welsh Christmas Day custom. People attended church between 3am and 6am on Christmas morning. During the three hour service the carols were traditionally sung by men and without accompaniment.

10 A Calennig is an apple or orange with three twig legs stuck with dried fruit, cloves and a spray of holly stuck into the top. It is a traditional Welsh decoration to give friends and families on New Year’s Day to wish them luck during the new year.

11 Mari Lwyd is an old New Year tradition
Mari Lwyd is an old New Year tradition. The Mari is a horse’s skull decorated with ribbons and bells. The head is mounted on a pole and is covered by a sheet. It travels from farm to farm, taking part in poetry competitions. The Mari is believed to bring good luck to the houses it visits.
