Wildlife Trafficking is becoming a growing threat to conservation across the world. It is threatening Many of the Africa’s iconic wildlife species such as elephants, rhinos, big cats, pangolins and primates, etc.

4 ☞ Wildlife trafficking
Features of the Wildlife trafficking A trans-boundary crime; Operated by organized criminal networks; escalating; broader negative impacts; a single country can not control it;

5 The Horn of African region is increasingly becoming prone to wildlife/ nature crime. The region get involved in Wildlife Trafficking both as source & transit.

10 ☞ Wildlife trafficking
This global, multi-faceted crime is becoming increasingly profitable, attracting better organized and sophisticated criminal networks; It requires a national, regional & an international, multi-agency response to successfully combat it (joint & concerted effort). HA-WEN initiative (2012)

12 ☞ HA-WEN progress (some)
Set up a Steering Committee to pave the way for establishing the network , drawn from each member countries (July 2013) Developed Terms of Reference (ToR) for the SC of HA-WEN. Determined Structure of the SC: the SC has a chair, secretary & members

13 Conducted 3 HA-WEN SC committee meetings so far. The Statement of the Participants of the inceptive Work Shop (3-4 October 2012) sent to the respective Gov’ts. Indeed most governments of the region were positive about its establishment.

HA-WEN should be formally established soon. SC members should begin to work on HA-WEN activities. Partners and supporters should continue to support HA-WEN.
