2-18 Study Skills Learning Target: I will review adjectives. I will practice identifying adjectives. An ADJECTIVE modifies a noun or a pronoun. There are two main ways that adjectives can be used, as PREDICATE ADJECTIVES and as MODIFYING ADJECTIIVES.

Learning Target: I will review adjectives. I will practice identifying adjectives. PREDICATE ADJECTIVES Predicate adjectives are adjectives that are used after linking verbs. Almost all predicate adjectives can also be used as modifying adjectives.

Some children were noisy. The soup tasted strange. His tie seemed crooked. Examples: It is a hot day. It is a frightened cat. They were noisy children. It was strange soup. He had a crooked tie.

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES A useful test for recognizing predicate adjectives is to put VERY (or quite) in front of the suspected adjective. If the word really is a predicate adjective, it will still be a correct sentence. Example: The day was hot. The day was VERY hot.
