4 Focus on Research in Road Transport and the Automotive Sector
Transport is increasingly being considered from a system point of view, in which the user, whether in passenger or freight, identifies the most convenient and efficient method to achieve his objective of moving people or goods from A to B. The efficiency and global competitiveness of each individual part of the transport system must be increased to the maximum extent possible. Urban mobility and transport including traffic management and logistics Optimization of internal combustion engines and use of alternative fuels Electrification of the vehicle Safety applications in cooperative systems Improved materials and lightweight structures Ecological and efficient manufacturing

5 Challenges for the Hungarian Automotive Industry – Pillars of success
Working force (blue collar): the labour force in Central-Eastern Europe is still cheap, however efficiency and mobility is still an issue. Availability and depth of several relevant technical qualifications is limited, should be urgently developed. Highly qualified engineers: for R&D and production eingineering. More practice orientation is required. Supply base: the structure of the Hungarian automotive industry is mostly supplier oriented, thus the development of the local SMEs is a key strategical element Transport infrastructure: the road logistics is acceptable in most of the automotive regions, the opportunities of rail and water transport are still to be utilized Increased emphasize on R&D: especially for the local SMEs in order to increase the intellectual content in the products 5

8 Basic targets of the co-operation
Forming horizontal co-operation among the universities involved in research and education in automotive engineering leading to: Higher level of networking in order to better utilization of the research and education infrastructure, Unification of the education curricula, same understanding and content of the educated disciplines “not everybody does all” – sharing of the main competency fields depending on the demand of the local industry Better availability of the institutions for government, industry Forming critical mass for international R&D projects Sustainable model for vertical co-operation among institutions

13 Structure and Status of the New Vehicle Engineering Curriculum
Reasons for starting the new vehicle engineering curriculum Vehicle engineering should be positioned at the college (besides or on-top of the already existing vehicle manufacturing direction), difficult to educate vehicle manufacturing w/o having solid basis in general automotive engineering Attractivity of the College will be increased (being an automotive engineer is a top job opportunity, especially in the automotive regions, like Kecskemet) All other “competing” universities (Budapest, Gyor) have this education form Automotive industry, thus the related education has high priority for the politics, strong support is expected The automotive engineering education “pulls” the other education forms on high and medium (vocational) level

Basic module Specialization Vehicle manufacturing technologies Vehicle engineering (design and analyses Production systems and logistics Mechatronics in vehicles and production Mechanical and automobile engineering basics (material science, machine elements, vehicle engineering, CAX, measurements, electrotechnics, control engineering, quality, maintenance) + Economics and human sciences + Natural sciences (Math, mechanics, physics, aero- and thermodynamics, etc.) Practical training at companies ( weeks) Practice and industry demand oriented training

15 Infrastructure of the New Department
Structure and functions of the new department is in line with Budapest University and similar German Universities, covers the complete automotive engineering field Strongly practice oriented layout offers practical training opportunities in small groups during the studies Mostly education character, research facilities will be added in some later phase (priority is given first to the engineering and vocational education) Facilities are suitable for vocational and adult education/re-education as well Architectural design is finished Subsidy application is submitted to the government

16 Support and Mentor the Regional Vocational Training
The demand of the large automotive companies (Daimler in Kecskemet, Audi in Gyor, GM in Szentgothard) has been currently multiplied, which makes difficulties for the regional vocational schools to fulfill the requirements short termed Proposal has been made towards the government that with the participation of companies, local universities and the local government a new control and mentoring system should be established, which should Lead to concentration on this issue Supports the vocational schools with study material, trainers and equipment Lead to a system, which reduces the drop-out Result in the qualified working force on all-levels Financial issues to be solved by government/local government participation
