Tasks for “THE RAVEN” – Day One (Whatever you DO NOT complete is assigned for homework!)
Listen to the poem once through without stopping. When finished, jot down three questions about the poem on the bottom of p. 134. 2. Examine the poem Using your notes, use one color to highlight all of the gothic traits and setting aspects within “The Raven”. Also, LABEL them in the margins of your workbook. Evaluate the poem: Is its purpose to evoke HORROR or TERROR in the reader? Review your notes and record your answer on p. 134 in your workbook. List a few of the items & explain why. 3. Re-read your assigned stanzas & complete the following items in your workbook & Label them correctly in order to get points! a. Since “The Raven” is considered a NARRATIVE POEM, what part of the plot is your stanza in? (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) Explain this in your stanza’s margin. b. Challenging vocab words – CIRCLE them and record their definitions c. Allusions – UNDERLINE them and look them up. Write what or who w/ background info. Tasks for “THE RAVEN” – Day Two
1. Re-Examine the poem * Re-read it to yourself silently, if necessary. (a.) In the margin, write an interpretation of the poem & in which you answer the following questions: How does the sinister isolated setting contribute to the tone/mood? How would you describe the speaker’s mental state? What does the raven symbolize? …& the word “Nevermore”? (b.) In a different color highlighter than yesterday, highlight examples of ALL of the following poetic devices & LABEL them in the margins: (Use your KEYSTONE GLOSSARY OF LITERARY TERMS (packet) to assist you.) Figurative Language/Lit. Devices – simile, metaphor, personification/ repetition, dialogue, theme, & symbols. Sound Devices – internal rhyme, end rhyme, slant rhyme, RHYME SCHEME, alliteration, consonance, assonance, repetition Imagery – see, hear, smell, taste, touch 2. Review the STAGES OF GRIEF. Label EACH where they occur in the poem (in the margin of the workbook) = These reflect the shift in tone & mood! (See the slide on the screen!)
